Case Description:

(Minghui.org) Ms. Wu Guolan was born on December 21, 1946. She lived in Baoding City, Hebei Province and was the financial manager of Baoding City Fifth Hospital before her retirement.

She was arrested days after the persecution began in July 1999. She was held for a whole day and ordered to submit all her Falun Gong books and portraits of the founder of the practice. For one month after her release, she was ordered to report to the local Xiguan Police Station twice a day. Lu Guanjiang and another officer surnamed Su pressured her into writing a statement to give up her belief against her will.

Ms. Wu wrote a letter in 2000 and mailed it to officials at the central government, provincial government, municipal government, and district government, asking them to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. She thus became a target and was ordered to report to Dongfenglu Police Station every day for one month, during which time she was also interrogated several times.

Officers at Dongfenglu Police Station twice caged her together with thieves in their attempt to force her to give up her belief. She was also restrained at a conferencen room in her hospital for a day, and the then-president of the hospital said it was the order from higher-ups to force her to renounce Falun Gong.

Ms. Wu was arrested on January 3, 2001 while unfurling a banner at Tiananmen Square. She refused to reveal her name and address and was sent to Dongcheng District Detention Center in Beijing. She had her blood drawn but was not told of the results. Her cell head said there were many Falun Gong practitioners like her detained there.

Ms. Wu was released on January 18, 2001. As soon as she arrived home, four officers from Dongfenglu Police Station came and arrested her. They caged her and interrogated her overnight. They lied that an elderly practitioner who was arrested before her said she gave him Falun Gong materials to distribute and that they'd give him a heavy prison term if she denied that was the case. Not wanting to implicate the other practitioner, she admitted to the non-fact. She was sent to Qingyuan County Detention Center the next day.

She went on a hunger strike three times at the detention center. On the ninth day of her third hunger strike, she passed blood and rotten flesh. Only then did the detention center send her to a hospital, where the doctors could hardly detect her blood pressure and pulse. Her two sons came upon being notified of her condition, but they had trouble recognizing their mother who was not all what they remembered.

Ms. Wu was released the next day after her sons were forced to pay 3,000 yuan. Her hospital and local street committee sent people to harass her at home on a regular basis. In order to avoid further persecution, she left home in May 2001 and wandered about.

She was arrested on August 31, 2002 and sent to Baoding City Detention Center. She refused to answer questions during interrogation and was given two years of forced labor in November 2002.

It was very cold in November, but Ms. Wu was forced to stand facing a wall outside the lobby of Baoding City Labor Camp. She wasn't allowed to sleep until very late at night. There was no need and she could only catch some shut-eye on a bench. Such abuse lasted for more than ten days. Her legs became swollen and she needed help walking as a result.

She was also forced to do hard labor and watched around the clock. For a few months, she was also forced to watch videos slandering Falun Gong every day. She went on a hunger strike and was once restrained to a bed in a spread-eagle manner.

Ms. Wu went into a coma one night in June 2004 and wasn't sent to a hospital until the next morning. By then she had almost no pulse and blood pressure. She was listed in critical condition for a whole week before getting better.

Ms. Wu's hospital suspended her pension for two and half years. The police also deducted the police expense of travelling to Beijing to pick her up from her pension.

Ms. Wu was arrested in May 2011 while talking to people about Falun Gong. An officer slapped her in the face. She was given one year of forced labor, but the labor camp declined to take her as she was found to have severe heart conditions.

She filed a lawsuit against Jiang Zemin in June 2015 and was harassed by the police afterwards. Around May 2017, the police came to harass her again. She was not home, and they returned a few days later.

Ms. Wu passed away on February 10, 2018. She was 72.
