Qu Shanlin - 曲善林
(Minghui.org) A year in Dongling Prison turned Mr. Qu Shanlin from a healthy man into one in critical condition, leading to his death.
Mr. Qu was illegally arrested for practicing Falun Gong in September 2010 and sentenced to three years in prison in December 2010. He was brutally tortured in Dongling Prison, as a result of which his health rapidly declined. Mr. Qu was eventually diagnosed with stomach cancer. The prison did not grant him medical parole until the end of 2011, when he was already near death. Mr. Qu passed away on May 16, 2012, at the age of 67.
Family Torn Apart
Mr. Qu was a retired worker from Fengcheng City, Liaoning Province. Once afflicted with a myriad of illnesses, he enjoyed excellent health after practicing Falun Gong. Having experienced the benefits of Falun Gong firsthand, Mr. Qu remained steadfast in his faith even after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched a brutal campaign to eradicate the practice in 1999. As a result, he became a target of the persecution.
Under of the order of the 610 Office, officers from the Fengcheng Police Department broke into Mr. Qu's home in April 2004 and arrested him for practicing Falun Gong. He was held in a detention center and subsequently transferred to Dandong Forced Labor Camp, where he was severely tortured. Fengcheng City Police Department and Dandong City Police Department instigated the transfer.
His wife subsequently collapsed due to shock and terror of the persecution. She became very ill. When she was on her death bed, her family requested for the labor camp to let Mr. Qu see her. However, authorities refused and did not even notify Mr. Qu that his wife was dying. Mr. Qu only learned that his wife had passed away when he was released.
Illegally Tried and Tortured
On September 5, 2010, Mr. Qu and four other practitioners--Mr. Jiao Lin, Mr. Liang Yuncheng, Mr. Wu Jian, and Ms. Sun Zhongqin--went to Minzhu Village and Ziyou Village in Baiqi Town to clarify the facts about Falun Gong to people, to dispel the lies propagated by the CCP.
Kang Qindong, a local villager deceived by the slanderous propaganda of the communist regime, reported them to the police. The five practitioners ended up being arrested. The police also confiscated Mr. Lin's car.
Under the order of Wang Zhengjin and Chen Bin from the Domestic Security Division, three police officers from the Baiqi Police Station--chief Jiang Jun, deputy chief Fen Xizhu, and Zhang Yuhai-beat them for the duration of the whole night. They were transferred to the Erlongshan Detention Center (a.k.a. Fengcheng Detention Center) in Fengcheng City the next day.
The five Falun Gong practitioners were tried at Fengcheng Court on the morning of November 23, 2010. The court admitted fabricated evidence from the Fengcheng Police Department in order to sentence the practitioners. Mr. Qu was sentenced to three years in prison.
Mr. Qu appealed the wrongful verdict, but Dandong Intermediate Court denied his request for a new court session and upheld the original sentence on April 10, 2011. He was sent to Shenyang Prison the next day and later transferred to Dongling Prison.
Mr. Qu was subjected to cruel torture in Dongling Prison. As a result, his health sharply deteriorated and he was eventually diagnosed with stomach cancer. Nearly two-thirds of his stomach had to be surgically removed. When prison authorities finally granted him medical parole at the end of 2011, he was already extremely emaciated and weak.
Mr. Qu passed away in his son's home on May 16, 2012.
