The US embassy in Beijing has been unsuccessful in its bid to have one of its citizens kept out of a Chinese jail.

The case is linked to the ongoing crackdown against the outlawed meditation group, Falun Gong.

Tang Chun Yen is an American citizen arrested in May this year on charges of providing state secrets to overseas organisations.

Her crime was to give foreign news organisations evidence of Falun Gong practitioners being detained in a psychiatric institution just outside Beijing.

However, the judge reportedly said Ms Tang would serve her three year sentence in China, a snub to US diplomatic efforts to have her deported.

China's Foreign Ministry says the ban is justified and will be maintained, but US diplomats say this case will be added to the list of human rights complaints against the Chinese Government.
