The Situation of the Persecution Against Dafa Practitioners at Peking University

Yang Fengling is a 64-year-old female senior chemist. After appealing on Tiananmen Square on December 12, 2000, she was immediately illegally detained for 14 days. Police beat her because she refused to identify herself. She went on a hunger strike and refused to drink water for 5 days, in order to demand the right to read [Dafa] books and to practice the Falun Gong exercises. She also demanded the withdrawal of the charges against Dafa and Master Li, and the release of all the detained Dafa practitioners.

Wang Suyun is a 57-year-old retired librarian with a college degree. She was detained for 48 hours because she attended a trial in the intermediate-court on December 26 th, 1999. She was again detained for one day after she appealed to the State Council Appeal Office during the congress session in March 2000. After unfurling a banner on Tiananmen Square on April 4th, 2000, she was beaten and detained until midnight. On April 17th, she was forcibly taken away from her home by police from the Yanyuan Police Branch and detained for 24 hours. On October 6th, she was arrested on Tiananmen Square for no reason and was detained for one day. On December 28th, when she was applying for new resident ID, she gave the police Dafa truth-clarifying materials. Because of that, she was detained for 12 hours and then sent to Qinghe Detention Center. She was released when the physical exam for the detention process showed that she has high blood pressure.

Li Zhanjin is a 52-year-old female senior engineer. Her former employer was the QingNiao Corporation of Beijing University. On December 26 th, 1999, she was detained for one day because she attended a trial in the intermediate-court. She was again detained on April 13th, 2000, after going to appeal on Tiananmen Square. On April 17th, she was forcibly taken away from home by police from the Yanyuan Police Branch and detained for 24 hours. On the evening of July 19th, under the pretense of 'talking to her', the police from the Yanyuan Police Branch tricked her into going to the school security department. The City's Public Security Bureau then took her away. She was released after being detained in the "Bomb Bureau" for a week.

Chen Xulin is a 50-year -old female deputy director of the training department of QingNiao Corporation of Beijing University. n September 1999, she was arrested when she went to file an appeal at the Appeal Office. Afterwards, she was sent back to the school security department. When she again went to appeal in October, she was sent back in handcuffs. She was arrested on December 26 th, 1999 when she attended a trial in the intermediate-court. In April 2000, she twice went to appeal on Tiananmen Square and was arrested and detained for a month. At the same time her house was ransacked. All of the Dafa books were confiscated.

Mr. Cao, an employee of the Publishing Department of Beijing University, was detained for over ten days because he practiced Falun Gong outdoors in September 1999.

Ms. Duan, a female employee of the FangZheng Company of Beijing University, was arrested because she opened a banner on Tiananmen Square in June 2000. She was detained for a month in QingHe. One evening in November, about seven or eight policeman broke into her house, ransacked it, and then arrested her. She was detained for twelve hours.

Yuan Lin, a 46-year-old employee of Beijing University, was detained for twelve hours because she appealed by practicing Falun Gong exercises on Tiananmen Square on October 26 th, 1999. She was arrested in January 2000 for practicing at a practice site. She was later detained at the Haidin Police Branch for thirteen days. After she was released, her company told her that she could not work until she gave up Falun Gong. They also stopped paying her salary, starting in June. On April 25th, 2000, she was arrested for appealing on Tiananmen Square. After her house was ransacked, she was sent to the "Bomb Bureau" and was detained there for thirty days. During the detention, she was handcuffed, with her hands behind her back, for having practiced the Falun Gong exercises. Afterward, she was dismissed from the Communist Party Chapter of her school.

Wang Huanchen is a 24-year old graduate student from the class of 1998 of the Life & Science College of Beijing University. He went to appeal on October 29 th, 1999, during the congress session. He was tricked into going to the Tiananmen Police Branch and detained. On December 26th, 1999, he was stopped while on his way to attend a trial in the intermediate-court and sent to the Police Branch. After being sent back, he was interrogated. Under pressure, his department tried to talk to him several times. They tried to convince him to write a pledge to not contact other practitioners; otherwise, they would dismiss him. Because he insisted on persisting in cultivation, he was deprived of the right to pursue a Ph.D after he got his Master's degree.

Xue Weiwei is a 31-year old female Ph.D student from the class of 1998 of the Research Center of Remote Sensory. On April 13th, 2000, her husband and her went to Tiananmen Square to clarify the truth about Falun Gong. After being arrested, she was sent back to her hometown, Jinan, and was detained for four months. She was not allowed to leave her room for the first three months (she was pregnant at the time). She has now been fired from her job (she worked for the army), dismissed from the Communist Party, and her school (Beijing University) also dismissed her from her Ph.D program using the excuse of her being pregnant (She should have the right to suspend her studies without losing her status as a student, but is denied this).

Miao Naiyi is a male graduate student from the class of 1998 of the department of Earth and Physics. In early 2000, he was frequently forcibly taken away for interrogation due to his practicing at a practice site. In March 2000, he was detained for a month because he went to clarify the truth about Falun Gong to the People's Representative. Later, his school suspended him from school for half a year. In September, because he put up posters revealing the truth about Jiang Zemin in a triangular area inside the university, he was detained for another month. In mid December, he went to Tiananmen Square to appeal and to demand that the truth about Dafa be clarified. As of today, he has not yet returned.

Luo Xiang is a 28 year-old male philosophy Ph.D candidate from the class of 1998. On January 15th, 2000, while practicing the exercises at the group practice site, the Police Bureau called him. His school pressured him to write a pledge; otherwise, he would be dismissed. On March 15th, 2000, he was detained after he went to clarify the truth about Dafa to the Xin Fang Police Branch. He was later escorted back by a staff member of his school. He went to Tiananmen Square on June 15th and was beaten after he opened a banner reading "Falun Dafa - Truth, Compassion, Forbearance". He was later released.

Qi Jianli is a 23-year-old female psychology student. She got her bachelor's degree in 1999 and soon after entered the Master's program. She has an outstanding academic record. In 1999, she graduated with honors from Beijing University and was accepted by the graduate program without having to go through any entrance exams. In September 1999, she went to appeal at the Appeal Office and was escorted back to the school security department. In the same month, she was arrested when sharing experiences with other practitioners in Qinhua University. She was again sent to the school security department and interrogated. In December, she was escorted back while attending a trial in the intermediate-court. The department staff tried to persuade her to stop doing Falun Gong several times.

Sui Xiaoshuang is a 23 year-old female psychology student. She got her bachelor's degree in 1999 and then entered the Master's program. Due to her outstanding academic record, she was accepted by the Graduate Program without having to take any entrance exams. She was arrested for appealing to People's Congress during the 1999 session and was sent back to the school's security department. The department staff also tried to persuade her to stop doing Falun Gong several times.

Although Qi and Sui had exceptional grades during graduate study, because they decided to be cultivators, they were forced to give up their right to apply for scholarships.

Zhao RuiYu is a 24-year-old female. She got her bachelor's degree of the Department of Asian language in 1999. After graduation, she returned to her hometown. Between September and October of 1999, she and her mother went to Beijing to appeal and were arrested at the train station. Her mother was detained. At the end of October, she successfully made it to Beijing, this time alone. In December, she was arrested while attending a trial in the intermediate-court. She went to appeal in Tiananmen Square in April 2000 and was escorted back to her hometown. She was detained for a month and was forced to work during her detention.

On July 21st and 22nd of 1999, five staff members from Beijing University, including Dong Wenhua and Yang Fengling, went to appeal at Fuyou Street [main government headquarters] and were detained for 24 to 82 hours respectively.

On December 26th, 1999, a group of nine people consisting of teachers and students was arrested while attending a trial in the intermediate-court.

Family members of Falun Gong practitioners at Beijing University were also persecuted:

Wu Yuanying, a 58 year-old female senior teacher, was detained for 40 days for her appeal on Tiananmen Square on February 4th, 2000.

Zhang Qiuyu, a 62 year-old female senior teacher, was detained for 2 days on 2 separate occasions, on April 13th and December 12th 2000, because she appealed on Tiananmen Square.

Jin Ying, a 31 year-old female, was also detained for 2 days on 2 different occasions for appealing on Tiananmen Square: the dates were February 4th and March 5th 2000. In March 2000, since she had been practicing the exercises outdoors, she was tricked into visiting the Police Department and then detained. She was detained for 30 days after appealing on Tiananmen Square on April 13th, 2000. During the sentence, she faced all sorts of physical abuse. The policemen ordered prisoners to beat her up.

Liu Julian, a 59 year-old female, was detained for 2 days ffter her appeal on Tiananmen Square on February 4th, 2000. She was arrested on December 12th, 2000 and taken away by the Zhejiang province police because she appealed on Tiananmen Square. Her current situation is still unknown.
