"We Have A Responsibility -- China's Persecution Must be Stopped!"

April 13, 2001

Dear Mr. Prime Minister, We are writing to you because we feel that the practitioners of Falun Gong suffering persecution in China deserve our government's support. The government of China has turned a deaf ear to international appeals and has indicated that this persecution will only increase. We feel it is necessary that Canada co-sponsor, or initiate themselves, a resolution censuring China's human rights abuses at the current UN human rights meeting in Geneva. The persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, including rape, torture and death, is not a matter of isolated incidents, it is a government policy initiated by Party leaders, which is being carried out nationwide. Our country's attention and action is necessary. We must not allow more innocent people to be tortured and killed simply for their belief in the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance. Ms. Zhao Xin, a 32-year-old assistant professor, was said to have a crystal pure heart by her students and co-workers. Ms. Zhao was arrested as she practised Falun Gong's gentle exercises in a Beijing park. Her spine was broken in three places in police custody. Ms. Zhao was sent to the hospital while still in handcuffs and shackles. After six months of severe suffering Ms. Zhao died from her injuries. Mr Su Gang, a 32-year old electrical engineer, was incarcerated in a mental hospital. After 9 days of overdose injections his neural system was completely destroyed. He died 10 days later. The mother of a Canadian university student was starved to death in a mental hospital. Canadian citizen, Professor Kunlun Zhang, was severely tortured in a Chinese labour camp and Canadian Citizen Jinyu Li's husband has been suffering in a labour camp for the past 14 months. Chinese officials here in Canada have spread propaganda attacking Falun Gong and have even pressured Canadian Mayors and government officials who award and support Falun Gong for its benefits here in Canada. Innocent peaceful people who stand for Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance are being murdered under the direction of their own government leaders. The United States has proposed a resolution to censure China's human rights record at the current UN meeting in Geneva. We call on Canada to also initiate or co-sponsor a resolution to condemn China. Canada's respected voice on human rights issues can make a difference and this crucial opportunity to stop further killing will not come again. We have a responsibility. China's persecution must be stopped! Some Engineering Students at the University of Toronto.
