Hongze Lake, One of the Five Biggest Lakes in China, Is Drying Up

July 18, 2001

(Clearwisdom. net) According to the July 14th news from Boxun, the drought in China has now become even more severe. Hongze Lake, one of the five biggest lakes in China, has almost completely dried up recently because of the continuous drought and the shortage of water supply from the upper Huai River to the lake.

According to the report by the Zhongtong Agency from Nanjing City [Jiangsu Province], since March, rainfall in the Huaibei area of Jiangsu Province has been consistently low, at only half of the usual amount. As a result, Hongze Lake, located in the lower reaches of the Huai River, has nearly become exhausted.

This report shows that the exhaustion of water in Hongze Lake has caused a complete disruption of 3 passenger transportation lines on the lake. It is also greatly affecting the irrigation and utility water in the Huaibei area, which now is left with only the Changjiang River to rely on.
