Floods Threaten Shanghai and Surrounding Areas

According to the Xinhua Agency in Shanghai, the recent series of heavy rainfalls have caused floods in some suburban areas of Shanghai. The water level of Taihu Lake's upstream as well as the freshwater level is high. Shanghai City Flood Prevention Headquarters issued a notice today asking all of the Shanghai suburban areas to strengthen flood prevention efforts.

Since June 17, Shanghai has been hit by a series of heavy rainfalls. Other disastrous weather such as tornadoes and typhoons also occurred. The total rainfall has reached 260mm; this is way over the normal 188mm level. Based on the information from related departments, this morning, the water level exceeded the warning level by 21~23mm in some suburban areas including Mishidu, Maodian, Sanhe, and Zhutin. Meanwhile, the upstream water level of Taihu Lake reached 3.57 meters. This is the second time this year that the water level has exceeded the warning level. The water level in Jiaxing, Zhenjiang Province has exceeded the danger level, adding more pressure on those working towards flood prevention in Shanghai. Although many people have worked to prevent floods in Shanghai by vigorously draining out water, a flood in the Shanghai suburban area would need two consecutive days of sunny weather to be completely drained out.

Although the weather observatory announced today that the tropical high pressure is going to gradually increase, it also warned that there would be strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfalls in the near future, sometimes with continuous rainfall.
