A Practitioner Lectures to a Taiwan High School on Hong Kong's Proposed Article 23 Legislation and the Persecution of Falun Gong (Photos)

Dec. 18, 2002

(Clearwisdom.net) The Taiwan Ministry of Education has recently engaged in promoting and strengthening students' knowledge of human rights in schools at various grade levels. On December 11, 2002, Taidong High School invited Falun Gong practitioner and lawyer Ms. Zhu Wanqi to give a speech on human rights to over 700 teachers and students. Ms. Zhu began her speech by emphasizing that young students are the best hope for a country's human rights development. In a democratic country governed by rule of law, only when people have a thorough understanding of human rights, can they truly and effectively make into reality the government's human rights legislation.

As Taiwan and Hong Kong are closely related in terms of politics and economics due to some historical factors and their geographic positions, Ms. Zhu used Hong Kong's proposed Article 23 as an example that has recently aroused intense opposition and criticism from all over society. She encouraged the students to access the Internet to get to know the details about Article 23. In addition, Ms. Zhu explained how the regime in Mainland China constantly violates the constitution and infringes on the rights of citizens to practice Christianity. The Jiang regime's persecution of Falun Gong over the past three years is also widely known and found to be unacceptable by the international community. She also mentioned the support and help that international human rights organizations can offer at present. She emphasized that the international community should take effective action, and the people should collectively monitor the legislative and judicial process in Hong Kong.

Teachers and students gave her warm applause and the school's education director reminded the students to visit the website to sign the petition to show their opposition to Article 23, and also hoped that they would take a righteous position regarding the persecution of Falun Gong.
