Dear [local Falun Gong Practitioner]:

On Monday, March 3, 2003 we presented the following resolution on the agenda for our Council meeting:

"WHEREAS the Council of the Town of New Tecumseth is aware and very concerned with violations against the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the Peoples' Republic of China;

AND WHEREAS many people are imprisoned and tortured for practicing Falun Gong in China;

AND WHEREAS the fundamental principles of humanity are sacred and each person is entitled to the basic human rights of freedom, belief, thought and expression in so far as they do no harm to self, others or property.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Right Honourable Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs speak out firmly against these inhumane practices in the Peoples' Republic of China while they are in attendance at the Geneva meeting of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights;

AND THAT they again demonstrate a leadership role in establishing world peace and justice for all mankind."

The Deputy Mayor spoke at length in support of this cause. When the vote was taken to support the resolution it was passed with everyone on Council in favour.

Our intentions are to circulate this to our local MP Paul Bonwick and to Prime Minister Chretien's office for his support at the Geneva Conference. We wish you the very best in your efforts to gain recognition and freedom to practice Falun Gong.

Larry Keogh, Mayor
Town of New Tecumseth
