Charles Li's Manuscript Details the Inside Situation In Prison (Photos)

June 11, 2003

(Clearwisdom.net) Dr. Charles' Li's manuscript is a 109-page neatly handwritten document that he prepared in prison in China. Dr. Li went on hunger strike for eight days to protest jail officials' refusal to allow these documents to leave the prison. Sixty-nine pages of the manuscript were written while his hands were tightly cuffed for three days and nights. This was April, yet he was still wearing the winter clothes that he had been wearing when he was arrested. He had not been allowed to change his clothes for months, even though they had become ill smelling.

The author of the document, American citizen Dr. Charles Li, was arrested in January upon arrival at the Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou, China. He was detained and sentenced for "preparing to sabotage TV." For the past five months, he has been unable to make phone calls to his fiancée in America. On May 8, he was transferred to Nanjing Prison and since then, has not been allowed to meet with American Consulate officials. The authorities in China have continuously claimed that he receives good and humanitarian treatment.

The manuscript includes a 53-page detailed record of his March 21 court "trial" in both Chinese and English, and 40-pages of appeal letter in both Chinese and English, including a letter to US Consulate officials and an open letter to the public, and a 13-page documentation of his the physical and mental persecution authorities in China have imposed upon him.

Charles' manuscript states that he went on a three-day hunger strike to protest when he was illegally arrested in January. He was brutally beaten and interrogated for the three days and nights, and not allowed a moment of sleep. After that, he was forced to watch videos that defame Falun Dafa. According to a police guard who has had much contact with Charles, since Charles is an American citizen, any charges related to Falun Gong would conflict with freedom of belief, so Charles case was hard for Chinese officials to handle. The authorities ultimately decided to avoid mentioning "Falun Gong," and charged him with intent to sabotage TV broadcasting.

In the conclusion of his appeals, Charles Li said, "...using TV to tell the general public about the persecution of Falun Gong is an urgent danger-avoidance action for the benefit of the country and its people." According to Article 21 in China's criminal law, even if the act caused minor inadvertent losses, such losses would not be accountable for in court. Charles went on to point out that making the truth known to the general public safeguards China's institution and criminal law. Those who should truly be put in the defendant's seat are those who persecute Falun Gong.

Charles Li's friends in America have made continuous efforts to rescue him. Many practitioners came to the Chinese Embassy in Washington DC to hold hunger strike appeals.
