On March 5, 2002, Changchun cable TV network was intercepted and eight channels broadcast programs created by Falun Gong practitioners. The broadcast lasted 40-50 minutes without interruption. This is the first time in the history of China that common people were told the truth through mass media. Liu Chengjun, one of the practitioners behind this magnificent feat gave his life for it. On December 26, 2003 while most people still enjoyed the Christmas spirit, Liu Chengjun left this world after enduring 21 months of prison torture.
Before Liu Chengjun intercepted the cable TV signals, several hundred or more Falun Gong practitioners were persecuted to death because they insisted on their belief and clarified the truth about Falun Gong. Liu Chengjun certainly knew what he would be faced with, but he didn't turn back. This hero, who gave his life to spread the truth, will be remembered in history.
Those who criticized the intercepting issue as illegal, should re-examine their views. In a free society, nobody needs to intercept cable TV signals to express his/her opinion, because freedom of belief and speech are respected and safeguarded, and the media actually plays a roll in supervising the government.
But in China, the TV station and other media, which should belong to common people, are controlled by autocrat Jiang Zemin's regime as their personal megaphone. Jiang's regime has done their utmost to frame and slander Falun Gong, and not allowed practitioners any voice. Falun Gong practitioners insisting on their belief, clarified the truth to the public, but they were abducted, beaten and even killed. In this situation, intercepting TV signals to tell the truth to the public is completely reasonable and legal conduct. If intercepting programs to reveal the truth is said to violate the law, then someone who was robbed and reported to police, might also be said to violate the law.
Falun Gong practitioners tell the truth at great cost. From their perspective, it helps ordinary people obtain a good future. It is selfless, benevolent, and magnificent. Even if you don't agree from the spiritual level, you can see from the objective perspective, that they defended their right to belief and speech in a peaceful and reasonable manner, while at the same time defending the rights of all Chinese people. When Falun Gong practitioners can exercise their right to belief and speech without persecution in China, all Chinese people will obtain the same rights.
Chinese media is flooded with political lies, while authorities force common people to repeat them. Lying has become part of life in China, and people don't regard it as disgraceful, so falsities abound and morals degenerate rapidly. The harm is obvious. A typical case can be seen with the scandalous cover up of the SARS epidemic in China, which hurt many people. Similarly, if they succeed in covering up the truth of how innocent practitioners are being killed, their lies become a powerful and effective weapon, from which no-one is secure.
People in China's intellectual circles have been talking about the bottom line of telling the truth. In this tragic environment, revealing the truth can lead to detention in prison, family hardship, even loss of life; so we do not ask everybody tell the truth in every situation. But one may consider the horror of telling a lie against one's conscience, which could lead to great suffering and deformation of spirit. At this level, the fact that "Liu Chengjun gave his life to reveal the truth" is not unthinkable. He let those living in this time of lies see the hope of salvation.
