Ms. Liu Suwen's family saw her for the first time since her arrest on August 12, 2004. They were stunned at the sight of an emaciated and trembling Liu Suwen who was unable to walk or talk.

Falun Dafa had given her a new life

Ms. Liu Suwen lived at the Beishanli Farm and was 57 years old. She used to suffer from a herniated lumbar disc. When the condition attacked she could not walk or sit and would experience great pain, even when lying in bed. She had no choice but to be hospitalized on November 24, 1993. She was discharged from the hospital on April 13, 1994 and paid between 7,000 and 8,000 yuan to cover medical expenses. Her condition did not improve, however, and she had to walk with crutches. Ms. Liu could not do any chores around the house because she did not even have the strength to pour rice into the rice cooker. She also had severe migraine headaches that added to her suffering. Her husband had a stroke and could not take care of himself. Liu Suwen was often forced to borrow money to pay for their medical treatments. Because of her extremely difficult life she almost lost the will to live.

December 25, 1994 was a memorable day for her, as it was the day she started practicing Falun Gong. Soon after, all of her illnesses disappeared. Her family and friends saw the changes in her and were amazed at the power of Dafa.

A deformed Liu Suwen after torture

On the afternoon of July 23, 2004, three plainclothes police officers ransacked Liu Suwen's home and forcibly took her to the police station. The police didn't notify her family of the arrest and later didn't allow her family to visit her. They transferred her to the No. 2 Detention Center. When her family got wind of the news and went to the detention center, the authorities refused to let them meet with Liu Suwen. Nothing was heard from Liu Suwen between July 23 and August 3. When her family went to the Majia Police Station and to the detention center, the authorities said, "We don't have any information on Liu Suwen." Her family kept asking around and eventually learned that Ms. Liu has been sent to the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp.

Liu Suwen's family saw her on August 12 for the first time since the arrest. The labor camp authorities claimed they had notified the police station and had told the police to notify Liu Suwen's family, but the police station apparently decided to keep the information from the family. Their meeting was a heartrending scene, because Liu Suwen could not walk or talk and two people had to support her. She had a blank stare and her whole body was shaking like a leaf in the wind. The labor camp authorities limited the visit to 30 minutes and sent people to monitor the conversation between Liu Suwen and her family.

Ms. Liu's family went back to visit her on September 30 and discovered that she could no longer see anything.

The labor camp guards always urge the detainees' families to send money to the detainees. However, those detained report that they never received the money. In addition, the labor camp authorities force the detainees to buy necessities from the labor camp store, priced several times above the fair market value.

Official TV programs depict Masanjia Labor Camp as "a wonderful place with good food and a hygienic environment," while in fact the food they serve is poor and the cells that hold detainees are filthy. The detainees are also forced to do heavy slave labor. Whoever refuses to cooperate with the guards is deprived of food and sleep. Sometimes the protester is detained in solitary confinement and is not allowed family visits.
