4. Eliminating Evil Influence in the Tuanhe Brainwashing Class
On the afternoon of the fiftieth day of my hunger strike, five of us were transported to the Third Sub-Division of the Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp, an area designated for brainwashing. The Third Sub-Division held seventy to eighty Falun Dafa practitioners, but all of them had been forced to renounce their belief and were serving sentences. Yao Jie and Teng Chunyan had also detained there and were reported to have participated in the brainwashing persecution. The personnel stopped our force-feeding and IV drips, but we did not end our hunger strike. In the evening, I was assigned to Class No. 5.
Early next morning the personnel began a program of brainwashing designed to force us to renounce our belief in Falun Dafa us. In the daytime they tried to force us to view videos that defamed Dafa. In the evening, several of people surrounded each practitioner and began a process of using all means to disorient and confuse practitioners until they could get us to renounce our belief. They called these attempts, "offering their assistance and help," or trying to "enlighten" us. However they quoted twisted versions of Master's teachings in an effort to confuse practitoners. I resisted their attemps by standing up when they ordered me to sit, looking anywhere except at the video when they ordered me to look at the video, or closing my eyes when orderd to keep them open. When they ordered me to talk, I recited the words from the teachings of Falun Dafa to them.
On the third day at the Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp, one of us practitioners who we felt was the strongest one, renounced her belief in Falun Dafa. In the past, she had not given up her belief after having been handcuffed and chained for more than half a month or after several days of being beaten with batons. I was very sad and further realized the seriousness of cultivation practice.
After the staff achieved this, which they described as a "fruitful victory," they became even more aggressive. From six or seven o'clock each morning, they began to attempt to force us to renounce our belief, disregarding our extremely weak bodies. Several of the staff besieged me in turn without letting me take a break, and this would continue until three or four o'clock in the morning, until I was finally allowed to sleep.
The Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp officials offered compensation or rewards to those who participated in the persecution effort to get Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their belief, which encouraged them to apply more pressure on us by forcing us to view the propaganda videos that defamed Master and Dafa. Physical suffering was not much to us anymore. In this evil environment, mental torture was by far more severe than physical pain. The torture was indescribable. The brainwashing program was overwhelminglyand the staff repeatedly attacked our minds without relenting. The ferocity was so much that I felt it could swallow us up at any moment.
I quietly told Master in my heart, "Master, as a disciple, I would never betray Dafa, and I would protect Dafa with my life. If I had to die, I would not do anything that would damage your image and Dafa." I used all the time to repeatedly recite the only few scriptures I memorized in the detention center, to encourage myself and strengthen my righteous thoughts. Master had told us,
"A cultivator has no role models. The path each person is to take is different"
"Cultivation is hard. It's hard in that even when a terrible calamity strikes, even when evil madly persecutes, and even when your life is at stake, you still have to be able to steadfastly continue on your path of cultivation without letting anything in human society interfere with the steps you take on your path of cultivation." ("Path")
Two more people wrote statements defaming Master under the unbearable pressure. My heart was in agony. I saw more clearly how vile and ugly the evil forces were. They just wanted to wear out a practitioner's will and turn him to embrace the teachings of "evil schools."
"It is bad, it is venomous, and it is evil. And just like poison, if you want it not to poison people it can't do that--that's just how it is."
("Teaching the Fa at the 2001 Canada Fa Conference")
Only two practitioners with our firm faith in our belief remained. The camp personnel changed their tactics and began to treat us well. They helped us to wash our hair and feet or our clothes. They would help us with anything, even without us asking for it. One night, the prisoners in the cell were all around me. An old woman held a cup of water in front of me and asked me to drink it. She seemed advising me sincerely, "Look at you like this. Drink some water to feel better. If you don't, I will hold the cup here for you until tomorrow morning." The others chimed in, "If you don't, we all will not go to sleep." I was not persuaded. The situation lasted a long time. Finally they rebuked me, accusing me of not having any feeling and friendship and left me alone.
They had tried many sly methods but they were all in vain. On the contrary, we practitioners, often recited Master's articles out loud to restrain the evil elements, to awaken the righteous thoughts in the others and hoped they would wake up to the truth. Some of them were hopeless. But some of them did some wrong things under the intense pressure and the influence of even a momentary wrong thought. Later they felt so much agony that they almost wanted to die and couldn't free themselves from their wrongdoings.
Our team leader, a woman named Zheng asked me, "If you all died of hunger, how could you practice the exercises and reach Consummation?" I said, "I do not think about Consummation any more. I just do what a practitioner should do. I just want to be responsible to all of you and help to create a peaceful cultivation environment for the people of the future with our blood and our tears." She knew it was impossible to turn me away from Dafa and gave up any further attempt.
With the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) coming, I started to miss my hometown in this brutal and lonely environment. Not able to give up this human notion, I negotiated with the detention center and reported my name. They promised me to send me back to my hometown with the one condition that I would drink a cup of milk. I did but immediately realized I was wrong. Master said in the article "Fa-Rectification Period Dafa Disciples,"
"If during the evil's persecution a Dafa disciple doesn't do well or slacks off, it's very possible all his previous efforts will have been for nothing."
The next day I was sent back to the detention center and continued the hunger strike. I was so skinny that they were afraid that I could die there. They sent me back to the police hospital again.
5. Giving up the thought of life or death and being released from that evil place
Many practitioners had been tortured inhumanly in that police hospital. I completely refused to cooperate with them when they tried to pump me with infusions or forced-feed me. The staff tied me to a bed. They restrained my neck with a sheet and taped across my face. I called out loudly, "The police are persecuting good people!" the staff then tried to cover my mouth. Their efforts to inject the needle or insert the tube in me were completely hopeless and in vain. The story of this was widely circulated. They had no choice but return me to the detention center again.
I was monitored 24 hours a day in the detention center. I resisted any attempt of force-feeding or infusions. By then, a new group of practitioners had been sent in. They all shed tears when they saw my condition. I told them to just do what Master told us to do,
"Don't wait, don't rely on others, and don't just hope for changes in external factors. Every one of us is creating a history for the future."
("To All Students at the Nordic Fa Conference")
I practiced what I said and encouraged fellow practitioner to break through the evil restraints. The detention center was afraid of my influence and sent me to the police hospital again.
At the police hospital my hands and feet were cuffed to a bed and the staff tried to give me an infusion or tube-feed me by force. I strongly resisted them. Without my hands, I would use my teeth. I wasn't worried about life or death and my mind was calm. I just wanted to do what the practitioners should do, clarify the truth of the persecution to the police and the nurses there, and exposing the crimes and evil deeds being committed against Falun Dafa, which made them change a lot. Even the most brutal police officer was moved and began to give me a hand. One day, my actions to pull out the needle and the tube provoked the hospital officials. My arm was stretched out and restrained onto the bed. My legs were stretched and shackled outside the bed. No one was allowed to unlock me without the hospital's permission. The shackles made a lot of noise at night. Around midnight I heard footsteps coming to a stop outside the door. After a long time, a police officer who was vicious to me before came in and unlocked the shackles for me. He said to me, "I have stood outside for a long time and couldn't bear seeing you suffer. You didn't do anything wrong. If I were a chairman of the country, I would release all of you." I had never seen him like this before.
Master said,
"A Dafa disciple completely opposes everything arranged by the evil old forces."("Dafa is Indestructible")
I would not tolerate anything that was not for me. The liquid food that had been barely poured into my mouth would spew out every single time. They could not find a vein to infuse me. The hospital officials were fearful and sent me back to the detention center.
The detention center officials and people from the "610 Office" had by then already decided to send me to the Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp. I only spent one day in the detention center. In order for the labor camp to accept me, they sent me back to the police hospital again for treatment [to improve my condition].
I continued to resist the persecution after I was sent to the police hospital. The liquid food that they tried to force-feed me with spewed from my mouth. They couldn't find a vein. Even if they did find one and tried to inject the IV, my blood was so thick that they had to stop. The Detention Center couldn't wait until the fifteenth day of the Chinese Lunar New Year before they sent me to Beijing's Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp along with several other practitioners while I was still very weak and couldn't get out of bed. The labor camp wouldn't accept me, so the detention center officials sent me back to the police hospital. The hospital absolutely refused to take me. The policemen had no choice but to take me back to the detention center again.
The detention center officials were extremely nervous about having me there. The head of the detention center personally came to watch me. Although he worked 24 hours and tried very hard to force-feed me, I did not cooperate with them at all. The liquid food they tried to force-feed me with spewed out of my mouth. They couldn't find a vein and thought I was dying. They reported my case to the supervisors who consulted with the hospital administrator, and the hospital agreed to take me for two days. Thus I was sent to the police hospital for the fifth time.
While I was in the hospital, they deployed many nurses and police officers to watch me day and night. They sent IV experts to give me injections. Sometimes, several different doctors tried fifty to sixty times but they still couldn't find a vein. All the nurses and police officers in the hospital came to see me and asked me, "Don't you fear dying?" I told them that my Master once said,
"You should know that once a person learns the truth and the real meaning of life, he will not regret giving up his life for it."("Some Thoughts of Mine")
Two days went by like this in the police hospital. The detention center head brought me the procedural papers for release on medical parole and told me, "We won't ask you for the several ten thousand yuan we have spent on you. You just need to sign the paper and eat something. Then you'll have the energy to go home." I refused to sign anything, and demanded my unconditional release. The next day, the person working in my provincial agency in Beijing came. Seeing me sitting in a wheelchair, fearing that I would die on the way, he didn't dare to take me home. Instead he instructed my family to take me home, and told them to keep the inhumane treatment I had received a secret.
On March 5, 2002, I returned to my hometown and once again merged into the great current of Fa-rectification.
I had obtained the Fa only a little more than two months before, but I could break out this den of evildoers in 99 days. This was possible because of my strong faith in Master, the mighty power of Dafa and Master's benevolent protection.
