Dafa practitioner Zuo Yan is 42 years old, an ex bank staff member of Jilin Traffic Bank. She had gone to Beijing to appeal and was illegally sentenced to the Heizuizi Labor Camp for one year. Two months later, she was released from the labor camp with righteous thoughts.

On September 16, 2003, at 6:30pm, an unknown person reported Zuo Yan while she was at home producing Falun Gong materials that explain the facts of the persecution. At 7pm, section chief Cheng Dongfeng and assistant team leader Yuan Zhicheng from the Jilin City Public Security Bureau brought 34 police officers and over a dozen police vehicles to illegally arrest her. Zuo Yan, realizing the police had surrounded her home, took three bags of Dafa materials and left her home trying to relocate them safely elsewhere. Instead, she ran right into the police who tried to arrest her on the fourth floor, and was thus taken to the police vehicle by force. The police also went to Zuo Yan's home and unlawfully confiscated her computer, printer, over 6,000 sets of Dafa truth materials, twenty-seven pictures of the Founder of Falun Gong, over 170 VCD's containing information about Falun Gong and the persecution, over 100 related photos, over 100 Falun Gong exercise tapes and other things. The police torture interrogated her throughout the entire night, attempting to extort a confession from her. The next day the authorities continued their interrogation. Cheng Dongfeng threatened during the interrogation, "If you don't tell us the source of the materials, we will break up your family and some of them will die." They took away Zuo Yan's bag and all her money. Later on they returned the empty bag to a member of Zuo Yan's family.

Cheng Dongfeng transferred Zuo Yan's case to the Changyi District People's Procuratorate in Jilin City and then to Changyi District Court during the period of December 8 to December 12, 2003. The People's Procuratorate did not investigate the case at all and they brought the case to court based on the police's fabricated evidence. On December 24, 2003, the Changyi District Court held an illegal trial of Zuo Yan. Prosecutor Li Ying announced that Zuo Yan's "circumstances" were particularly severe. All the people in the court were from the "610 Office" and different police precincts. None of them were public attendees. Her family was not notified of her trial. The show trial lasted about 40 minutes. Zuo Yan had already been on a hunger strike for 19 days. She was handcuffed with her hands behind her back and shackled. She was dragged into the court by two court police officers. In the court, she spoke righteously facing the police and the judge. The evil people were very afraid of her righteous words. As a result, they hastily and abruptly ended the proceedings and categorized her case as a "big case."

Zuo Yan was brutally force fed at the First Detention Center, causing her to have bleeding in the stomach and symptoms of heart disease. Her situation was life threatening. The detention center had reported to their superiors that, "Zuo Yan's physical condition was not suitable for further detention and she should be sent to the hospital." But the Jilin City "610 Office" staff said, "That will be the case for other people but [for Zuo Yan] as long as she is breathing, she cannot be released."

In the afternoon of February 25, 2004, the court sent Zuo Yan the verdict and illegally sentenced her to 10 years. Her family went to appeal at the related office but the office personnel claimed, "Zuo Yan is an organizer so the issue is very severe."

Zuo Yan went on hunger strike to resist persecution. Now it has been over 40 days and her life is in danger. She also was brutally forced fed. When her father saw her, she was extremely skinny, her heart condition was serious, a tube went into her nostril and her waist had an oxygen bag. She was only half conscious.
