In 1991, his family moved to Jilin City and he made a living delivering goods with a tricycle. Hou Zhanhai began practicing Falun Dafa in 1996. Since 1999 when the persecution started, Hou Zhanhai has been detained twice, sent to a brainwashing class once, and sent to forced labor camp once. In August 2001, he was tortured the brink of death and was then bailed out for medical treatment. In November that year, he died after the medical treatment proved to be useless. He is survived by his wife, a 21-year-old daughter named Hou Jing and an 11-year-old son named Hou Xin.

In August 2001, Mr. Hou Zhanhai was in critical condition due to the persecution in a forced labor camp. His family was allowed to take him out for medical treatment. A few months later, in November, Hou Zhanhai died after efforts to save him failed. His family still has not been able to pay off all the medical expenses.

After the persecution began in 1999 and Hou Zhanhai started to suffer from the persecution, his family's financial situation became worse and worse. Eventually, the family lost all sources of income. Since Hou Zhanhai's son Hou Xin is not a resident of Jilin City, the elementary school tuition is much higher for him than for local children. In order to pay for his tuition and to pay the house rent, Hou Zhanhai had to sell his tricycle driver's license and he lost his regular job. Although his wife and daughter worked hard for a living and to pay the school tuition, they still did not have enough money. Whenever a new semester of the school would start, fellow practitioners would give them some money and clothes to help them.

Gao Yuhua, Hou Zhanhai's wife, is an honest and kind woman. Facing the pressure of supporting a whole family, she had no complaints. The two children are also honest and kind. Although the three of them did not practice Falun Dafa, when faced with such intense pressure, they still maintained a positive state of mind.

Police from the Yunheli Police Station often harassed and threatened the family while Hou Zhanhai was still alive. Since Hou Zhanhai suffered continually from the persecution in the past few years, his family members suffered greatly and did not provide detailed information to other people for fear of suffering further persecution.

The following are the details about how practitioner Hou Zhanhai was persecuted.

Hou Zhanhai began practicing Falun Dafa in 1996 and benefited both mentally and physically from cultivation. He tried to be a good person based on the principles of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance" and told his customers about Dafa and about the benefits of practicing Dafa when he delivered goods to them. He liked to help people and people around him all knew that he practiced Falun Gong and was a good person.

After the persecution started in 1999, Hou Zhanhai went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa in August 1999. Since the appeals office in Beijing had become a place for police to arrest practitioners, he did not go to the appeals office and came back that time. In September 1999, he was sent to a brainwashing class. In the brainwashing class, the persons in charge tried all sorts of methods to make him and other fellow practitioners write a "Guarantee Statement." No matter how they tortured him, he kept telling people the facts about Falun Dafa. Later he went to Beijing again to appeal. When he got off the train and was questioned about whether he practiced Falun Gong, he answered that he did and was taken back to Jilin City. He was detained at the detention center for 15 days and had 200 yuan extorted from him by the local police station, Yunheli Police Station of Changyi District of Jilin City. He was detained for 15 days for the second time and Yunheli Police Station took 200 yuan from him again.

In October 2000, he bought the train ticket to Beijing and was going to appeal for Dafa, but he was arrested in the train station and sentenced for two years of forced labor. He was sent to Huanxiling Forced Labor Camp.

During March 12-14, 2001 when the labor camp conducted brainwashing, the prison police from the "strictly-managed" division including Han Jing (the head of the division), Liu Tao, Zhang and Wang brutally beat him. During the three days of inhumane torture, Hou Zhanhai suffered from being beaten with a police baton. His broken ribs ruptured his lung. He immediately lost consciousness due to the extreme pain. Afterwards, he often coughed up and vomited blood. He suffered extreme chest pain everyday.

On March 27, 2001, because he refused to renounce Falun Dafa, Hou Zhanhai was transferred to No. 1 Division, Baiquanzhen Forced Labor Camp of Liaoyuan City, Jilin Province. Instigated by the police, a prisoner named Zhang brutally beat him many times in order to force him to give up his cultivation. Because of this, Hou's health condition became worse day by day. Hou was 1.78 meters tall and used to be very healthy. Later he became emaciated and had a fever everyday. He sweat a lot and became very weak. He had to do heavy labor work such as digging a ditch everyday for long hours.

Later, he even had difficulty eating or speaking. He was unable to straighten his back and neck. His face looked dark. At this point, Liaoyuan Force Labor Camp called his family to pick him up immediately without delay. They were afraid that he would die in the labor camp. The labor camp forced the family to sign a paper stating that the labor camp was not responsible for anything that happened to him after he was bailed out for medical treatment, otherwise they would not allow him to be bailed out. The family was worried for his life and had to sign the documents. After sending him to the hospital, the doctors said that the labor camp had waited too long to let him get medical treatment and that his problem was untreatable. In August 2001, he was allowed to go back home, and in November he passed away.
