The Persecution of Zhao Jianmin and His Family from Anping County, Hebei Province

Sept. 18, 2008

(Clearwisdom.net) On July 19, 2008, Mr. Zhao Jianmin from the Hancunpu area of Liangwa Township, Anping County, Hebei Province was illegally arrested by Song Yuliang, police chief of the Beihan Village of Raoyang County. The arrest occurred after officers discovered information about Falun Gong on Mr. Zhao's cell phone. On July 20, he was taken to the Raoyang Detention Center, then transferred to the Anping Detention Center. His cell phone and several thousand yuan were confiscated.

Mr. Zhao Jianmin, 46 years old, and his wife Wang Jianmei, 43, started practicing Falun Gong in 1996. Before practicing Falun Gong, Mr. Zhao suffered from a severe stomach disease, which was later diagnosed as stomach cancer by doctors from the local hospital. After he started practicing Falun Gong, his stomach cancer was cured.

After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began the persecution of Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, Wang Jianmei traveled to Beijing to appeal for an end to the persecution. She was subsequently detained at the Anping County Detention Center for a month and several thousand yuan were extorted from her. After her detainment, policemen harassed Ms. Wang at home on every one of the sensitive dates. She was frequently warned not to practice the Falun Gong exercises in public or go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. On several occasions, the local authorities ransacked her home and illegally arrested her.

In the spring of 2002, several practitioners watched a video of Teacher Li's Fa lecture at Mr. Zhao Jianmin's home, and were reported to the local authorities. As a result, Mr. Zhao's wife, Wang Jianmei and two other practitioners were illegally arrested and taken to the brainwashing center called the "Hengshui City Law Education School." There she suffered severe torture, including seven force-feeding episodes that nearly killed her. During the force-feeding sessions, seven guards pushed down on her head, arms and legs, while others inserted a rubber tube through her nostrils, down into her stomach, then forced salt water and other unknown substances down the tube. Each time she was force-fed, her chest expanded beyond normal capacity, which strained her breathing. Ms. Wang's body was severely bruised during the torture, and she lost consciousness. The authorities extorted another 2,500 yuan from her family before releasing her.

On September 22, 2002, Jiao Chunling, deputy police chief of the Anping County Police Department, Hou Dajian, director of the Department of Politics and Security, Wang Yudao, police chief of the Liangwa Township Police Station, led over thirty officers to forcibly enter Mr. Zhao Jianmin's home, in order to arrest him. Mr. Zhao was not there, yet they ransacked his home. The officers returned early the following morning and jumped over the fence of the yard. When neighbors heard the noise and came out to look, the authorities forcibly dispersed them. According to the neighbors' accounts, there were five police vehicles surrounding Mr. Zhao's home. The home was thoroughly searched, and Mr. Zhao's television repair equipment was confiscated. These acts frightened Mr. Zhao's son and daughter, who clung to their mother's neck, crying in fear.

On another occasion, the same authorities broke into Mr. Zhao's home around midnight, while his wife Wang Jianmei and two children were asleep. Although Ms. Wang demanded that they leave immediately, they still ransacked the home. They claimed that Mr. Zhao was involved in the distribution of information about Falun Gong and that they were looking for evidence.

After this event, Mr. Zhao was forced to leave home, and his name was on the authorities' wanted list. During the past several years of persecution, Mr. Zhao's family was extorted for nearly 10,000 yuan and has accrued thousands in debt. The lives of his wife and two young children have been extremely difficult. Mr. Zhao's mother was extremely concerned about him and his family. Additionally, the wife of Mr. Zhao's brother was also sentenced to nine years in prison for practicing Falun Gong and distributing Falun Gong materials. This high level of stress contributed to her decline in health, and Mr. Zhao's mother passed away. During this time, Ms. Wang Jianmei was listed as the head of household instead of Zhao Jianmin. Mr. Zhao's name was not indicated in the household registration, which is a legal document for any citizen. The authorities indicated that this was the decision of the 610 Office. Currently, their family has not received the food subsidy that is allowed for any farmer's family.

Recently, the CCP used the Olympic Games as an excuse to harass the family again. From July 18 onward, the township authorities visited Mr. Zhao's home daily. They also used the pretext of performing a food subsidy documentation to coerce Ms. Wang Jianmei into giving them her I.D. card. Mr. Zhao was illegally arrested again, and subsequently detained at the Anping County Detention Center. His family has been denied visitation rights .
