Elementary School Teacher Sentenced to Five Years in Prison--His Wife and Son Suffered

Mr. Zhang Zhong was a teacher at Yulong Elementary School in Dongning County, Heilongjiang Province. In November 2004, he gave each student a Falun Dafa amulet (1), hoping that this would protect them when the Chinese Communist Party is destroyed by Heaven. When the parents of one of the children saw the amulet, they reported Mr. Zhang, and he was arrested by agents from the National Security Division of the Dongning County Police Department and sentenced to five years in prison. He is currently in Jiamusi City Prison.

After Mr. Zhang was sent to prison, his wife had a hard time coping at home. She had no job, no income, and still had to find the means to send her child to elementary school. On occasion, the mother and son were forced to skip a meal because there wasn't enough food to eat in their home. Mr. Zhang's wife often cried herself to sleep and became so absentminded that she found it difficult to take care of her child after 2006. As a result, the child had to live at the home of a friend of the family for a while.

Sentenced to Ten Years, Teacher Injured in Prison

Ms. Jiang Minshan was a recognized teacher at Dongning County Professional High School. In January 2002, she was arrested by Lin Xiaowei, the leader of the National Security Division of the Dongning County Police Department. The police officers deprived her of sleep for four days and nights and later transferred her to the Dongning County Detention Center, where she started a hunger strike to protest her imprisonment and abuse.

The guards incited four inmates to hold Ms. Jiang down, and they force-fed her powdered milk that contained a high concentration of salt water. Her nose and throat area were severely burned and she felt as if her stomach was on fire. The burning pain was slightly ameliorated by drinking large quantities of water, which was the only thing she could drink. But after a while, her whole body was completely saturated with water, and she was so swollen that even her eyes bulged. Dongning County Police Department later sentenced Ms. Jiang to ten years in Harbin Women's Prison.

When Ms. Jiang arrived at the prison, she was locked in a cell and beaten and tortured to the point that her spine was severely injured. She also developed a fever. Since she could not move, she was forced to lie in bed, unable to care for herself. When the guards saw that she was in critical condition, a doctor was brought in to examine her. It was discovered that Ms. Jiang had a tumorous growth on her spine.

In order to avoid any responsibility, Harbin City Women's Prison officials went to the Dongning County Police Department before the 2007 Chinese New Year and asked them to prepare a recommendation letter allowing the prison to release Ms. Jiang on bail for medical treatment.

The police department did not issue a letter, however, claiming that they didn't have the required documentation. Only after the police returned from their Chinese New Year holiday did they supply the prison with the requested documents.

When the police picked up Ms. Jiang from the prison, they saw that she had been severely tortured and was on the verge of death. They then took her directly to a hospital in Shanghai. She was soon operated on and the 12,000 yuan hospital bill was charged to Ms. Jiang. While she was being treated at the hospital, the guards from Harbin Women's Prison conspired to arrest her and take her back to the prison, even though she could hardly stand up.

Couple Separated for Nine Years

Ms. Jin Jinshan taught at Dongning County Third Elementary School prior to retiring. Her husband, Mr. Li Guizhe, is also a Dafa practitioner. In 2001, Mr. Li was arrested and sentenced to four years in Jixi City Prison. In the Jixi City Prison mine, he broke his leg and was later transferred to Mudanjiang Prison.

Thirteen days before his term was to expire in 2005, Ms. Jin was again arrested and sentenced to four years in prison. In 2008, three days before Ms. Jin's term was to expire, Mr. Li was again arrested and sentenced to two years in prison. As of now, the couple hasn't been together for a total of nine years.

When Ms. Jin was finally released, she learned that her previous employer had terminated her pension. Without an income, she was forced to live temporarily at her relative's home.

A Happy Family Torn Apart for Believing in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance

Ms. Jia Yanfeng, a teacher at Dongning County Second Middle School, was arrested in 2005 and released four months later. The local 610 Office pressured the Education Committee to force Ms. Jia to write a guarantee statement, promising to no longer practice Falun Gong. They threatened to terminate her job if she did not agree to their demands.

Ms. Jia refused to betray her conscience and therefore did not write a guarantee statement. As a result, the Education Committee fired her and sent her home. Her husband filed for divorce after learning about the situation. For the past four years, Ms. Jia has had to endure many hardships and finds it hard to make ends meet on a limited income. In addition, as a single parent, she has to raise her school-age child by herself.
