Over 70 UN Reports on Human Rights Expose the Ten-Year Persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Regime

Oct. 13, 2010

(Clearwisdom.net) Since July 20, 1999, Jiang Zemin used the state apparatus of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to brutally persecute the 100 million Chinese people who practice Falun Gong, a peaceful practice based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

The communist regime has all along denied torturing and even killing Falun Gong practitioners. However, their atrocities cannot be concealed forever, and the international community has become more and more concerned about such serious violations of human rights. Falun Gong Human Rights Working Group recently published "United Nations Reports on Violations against Falun Gong Practitioners & the Human Rights Situation in China (2000-2010)" in Chinese. This collection includes over 70 allegations related to the persecution of Falun Gong that have been published in various UN Annual Reports on Human Rights since 2000.

The reports detail aspects of the persecution of Falun Gong, including restriction of freedom of belief, restriction of freedom of expression, torture, inhumane treatment, violence against women, deaths in custody, organ harvesting, drug abuse, interference with judges and lawyers who handle Falun Gong cases, etc.

For example, on March 10, 2006, the UN Human Rights Council published a report titled "Report on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment: Mission to China" (E/CN.4/2006/6/Add.6) by Special Rapporteur Professor Manfred Nowak. In the report, it said, "Since 2000, the Special Rapporteur [Professor Nowak] and his predecessor have reported 314 cases of alleged torture to the Government of China. These cases represent well over 1,160 individuals." The report indicates (in the form of tables) that Falun Gong comprise 660f all reported torture cases; nearly 700f torture took place in detention centers, labor camps, and police stations; and over 800f the perpetrators are police, national security personnel, and labor camp and prison guards.

In addition, on May 29, 2009, the UN Human Rights Council published a report titled "Promotion and Protection of All Human Rights, Civil, Political, Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Including the Right to Development" ( A/HRC/11/2/Add.1). In the section "China: Deaths of Falun Gong practitioners", it documented 16 cases of the deaths of Falun Gong practitioners due to torture, including the case of well-known Chinese singer Yu Zhou. In the report, the author, Special Rapporteur Philip Alston, also attached his letter to the Chinese authorities, dated March 13, 2009, requesting investigations into each of the16 deaths, prosecutions against those responsible for the killings, and compensation payments made to the the families of the victims.

In 2006 when the communist regime's atrocity of harvesting organs from live Falun Gong practitioners was exposed, three UN Special Rapporteurs sent a letter in their joint names on August 11 of the same year to the Chinese authorities, requesting that the CCP provide evidence to disprove the allegations. The three authors of the letter are Professor Nowak, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Ms. Asma Jahangir, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religious Beliefs, and Ms. Sigma Huda, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Trafficking.

The next year, the UN Special Rapporteurs continued mounting allegations against the CCP. They said in their report, "A critical issue was not addressed in the Government's previous responses, in particular: It is reported that there are many more organ transplants than identifiable sources of organs, even taking into account figures for identifiable sources, namely: annual estimates of executed prisoners by whom a high percentage of organs are donated, according to the statement in 2005 of the Vice Minister of HLTH, Mr. Huang Jiefu; willing donor family members, who for cultural reasons, are often reluctant to donate their organs after death; and brain-dead donors. Moreover, the short waiting times that have been advertised for perfectly-matched organs would suggest the existence of a computerized matching system for transplants and a large bank of live prospective donors. It is alleged that the discrepancy between available organs and numbers from identifiable sources is explained by organs harvested from Falun Gong practitioners, and that the rise in transplants from 2000 coincides and correlates with the beginning of the persecution of these persons. ......The request for an explanation for the discrepancy in the number of transplants between the years 2000 to 2005 and the numbers from identifiable sources of organs is reiterated." (The report can be downloaded from UN official website: http://www2.ohchr.org/english/bodies/hrcouncil/7session/reports.htm; file number of the document is: A/HRC/7/3/Add.1)

The numerous cases recorded in these documents provide ample evidence to verify the existence of the persecution and the degree of its brutality. However they are only "tip of the iceberg".
