Henan Province: Mr. Wu Guangcheng of Kaifeng City Persecuted for Ten Years

Oct. 9, 2010 |   By a Clearwisdom correspondent from Henan Province

(Clearwisdom.net) Mr. Wu Guangcheng was born on November 7, 1959. He was a real estate company executive from Kaifeng City, Henan Province. Agents from the local police, the local Residential Committee, and his employer have persecuted him for practicing Falun Gong during the past ten years. He was incarcerated at Kaifeng Forced Labor Camp between 2001 and 2004. Officials sentenced him to six and a half years in prison during an October 2006 trial. He is serving his sentence in the Mi County Prison in Zhengzhou City.

Mr. Wu Guangcheng and his wife Ms. Wang Deping began practicing Falun Gong in September 1997. He persisted in his belief, even after July 1999, when Jiang Zemin launched a campaign to persecute Falun Gong. Mr. Wu lost his job due to the persecution in early 2000.

While at the Kaifeng Forced Labor Camp between January 2001 and 2003, guards went to the extreme to torture him. The camp's political head once told criminal inmates to spit into Wu's mouth. During the winter, criminal inmates stripped him and poured cold water on him. They also directed a fan on him for a long time. In the summer they wrapped Mr. Wu in a thick quilt for an extended time. One day a guard crushed a bun with his feet and forced him to eat the crumbs. They also often verbally abused Mr. Wu.

Mr. Wu was again held in the Kaifeng Labor Camp between March 2003 and March 2004. During that year he suffered from even more atrocious treatment. Kaifeng Labor Camp guard Zhang Yong repeatedly slapped his face and as a result, ruptured his right ear-drum. Under orders from labor camp political head, guards tied him to a "confining chair" for more than ten hours.

Following his midnight arrest by agents from the Longting Police Department on July 9, 2005, police demanded payment from Mr. Wu's employer. Several days later Mr. Wu escaped from a brainwashing center after a 24-hour hunger strike. But he could not return home because police constantly monitored his home. He was arrested several days later and sent to Kaifeng Detention Center, where he was detained for fifteen months. His family was not allowed even one visit.

Mr. Wu was sent to the Mi County Prison for six-and-a half years in October 2006, following a court decision. His family was allowed one visit in 2008, but all subsequent requests for a visit have been denied.
