According to her family, Ms. Tan has practiced Falun Gong for more than ten years. She works in a bank in Guangdong Province and is publicly regarded as a good worker and an honest person. On November 5, 2010, while looking at different online sites at home, she was arrested and taken away. Her whereabouts are still unknown.

At that time, Ms. Tan's husband, Zeng Guangyuan, was also at home. Mr. Zeng is employed by Guangzhou Customs. After the Chinese Communist Party started to persecute Falun Gong, he began to oppose his wife's beliefs. When she tried to do the exercises, he often cursed and beat her. One day she tried to talk to him about the persecution of Falun Gong, but he punched and kicked her.

After her arrest, Ms. Tan's 80-year-old mother asked her son-in-law where her daughter was. Zeng Guangyuan answered viciously, "I guarantee she will be home in ten days. However, when she gets here, I will teach her a lesson! Then see if she dares to 'make trouble' (practice and talk about Falun Gong)."

Ms. Tan's family suspect that the reason behind the arrest was the 2010 Asian Games, which were being held between November 12 and 27, 2010. Possibly it was Zeng Guangyuan who assisted the police in arresting his wife.

Ms. Tan's family went to the Binjiang Police Station to ask for her release and tried to send clothes and personal items to her, but the police ignored their requests.
