Considering the Difference Between Rationality and Fear

Sept. 2, 2010

(Clearwisdom.net) Sometimes practitioners have an attachment to fear when they do things. They then often use the excuse that they are just being rational as an attempt to justify and cover up their fear. Actually there is a fundamental difference between rationality and fear. Practitioners who have a clear understanding of the Fa principles, please share your understandings on this matter.

I personally think that a practitioner's rationality is a manifestation of one's cultivation state and wisdom. It is the capability to grasp and handle problems on the basis of selflessness. When a cultivator is rational, he acts in the interest of the universe and sentient beings, and for a beautiful future. His actions are entirely for the benefit of others, with no attachment to self. This is a manifestation of wisdom that comes from assimilating to the principles of the Fa. On the contrary, fear arises from an attachment to self. It arises when one tries to protect oneself or avoid being hurt. It comes about because one is afraid to lose some benefit for self. Fear is a notion that comes from self-interest, and self-interest is a characteristic of the old universe. That is not the true self.
