“If we follow the logic of the Communist Party and the Nazis, we find that the Party’s will outweighs everything else. As long as it is beneficial to the Party, the Party can fabricate whatever stories it likes and tell whatever lies it wishes. Not only is it unashamed of its actions, but the Party even takes honor in its base deeds. Therefore, countries governed under such regimes are deeply filled with lies.” – Preface
To accomplish his ambition of dominating the world, Hitler chose Poland as his target to conquer after he came into power.
However, he needed a reasonable and seemingly righteous excuse. The world knew that Poland had no ambition to invade Germany, nor did it have the need or capability. But this posed no problem for the Nazis, who were used to lying.
To create an excuse for invading Poland, under the direction of Minister of Propaganda Joseph Goebbel, Nazi propaganda and media utilized a plethora of means to create the illusion of an imminent Polish invasion. The Nazi propaganda machine thereby rallied the pride of German citizens to protect their homeland.
Early in August 1938, Nazi newspapers focused primarily on disgracing Poland. The newspapers claimed that Poland was the main culprit in spoiling peace in Europe, that Polish armed forces had already invaded Germany, and that Poland was the enemy of peace in Germany. Across-the-page headlines of the German News read: “Beware of Poland.” The headline of the Leaders’ News read: “Warsaw Claims to Bomb Danzig – Raging Poles Instigate Unbelievable Provocation.”
As Hitler's date for initiating war grew nearer, Nazi propaganda reached its peak. At the time, the news that Poland was set to invade Germany spread to every newspaper, and citizens all strongly supported national armament against Poland. The Twelve O’clock News reported that the Polish had attacked three German civilian airplanes. On August 27, the Citizens’ Chronicle ran a super-sized cross-page headline: “All of Poland Crazed to Fight – Upper Silesia in Chaos.” In reality, the Nazis had already deceitfully completed their war preparations.
So that the lies could appear more like the truth, Nazi media staged a fake scene of Poland invading Germany. In an attempt to further evoke German nationalism in the face of a foreign threat, the Nazis threw a few drugged inmates from a concentration camp onto the site to act as dying citizens “injured” by the Polish army.
On the evening of August 31, 1.5 million Nazi soldiers quietly moved into their positions near the Polish border and awaited the order to invade. Hitler then appeared in person to deceive the German people and the world. With a million soldiers positioned at the border, he issued a long “peace proposal.” At 9:00 p.m., Goebbels ordered all radio stations in Germany to broadcast Hitler’s “peace proposal.” Even on the day before the fall of Warsaw, the Nazis still engaged in large scale “peace” propaganda to continue deceiving the German people and the rest of the world.
Similar lies that completely distorted the notion of right and wrong were innumerable during the Third Reich. Nazi propaganda machines worked like production lines, generating non-stop lies day after day. To this, Lord Nevill Anderson, the British ambassador to Berlin, once mocked Goebbels: “To him, no bile is overly bitter, and no lies are overly blatant.” (*)
Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, from November 9 to the early morning of November 10 in 1938 was a nightmare for the Jews, and it was the start of greater disasters to come. About 267 Jewish churches and over 7000 Jewish stores were damaged or burned. The windows of many Jewish homes were broken that night. The loss in glass windows alone reached six million German marks.
As many as 91 Jews were killed in the incident. About 30,000 Jewish males from ages 16 to 60 were arrested and sent to concentration camps at Dachau, Buchenwald, or Sachsenhausen. After the incident, Goebbels said blatantly, “All statements about our stealing or destroying Jewish properties are disgusting lies. We did not touch a hair of the Jews.”
Goebbels said, “A lie becomes truth after it is repeated a hundred times.” This statement from the head of the Nazi propaganda department demonstrates clearly that the goal of Nazi propaganda was to do everything it could to disguise its lies as truth in order to deceive the public. Goebbels also said, “Propaganda only has one goal: to completely conquer the public. Everything that serves this purpose is good.” “Truth is irrelevant. Policy must be followed.” “The fundamental rule of propaganda is to continuously repeat its effective point. Lies need to be repeated and disguised to make them believable.” “Under Nazi rule, the traps of lies are everywhere. If one does not fall into one trap, he will fall into another.”
American reporter William Shirer’s personal experience is a very good example. In his book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, he wrote: “I myself was to experience how easily one is taken in by a lying and censored press and radio in a totalitarian state. Though unlike most Germans I had daily access to foreign newspapers, especially those of London, Paris and Zurich, which arrived the day after publication, and though I listened regularly to the BBC and other foreign broadcasts, my job necessitated the spending of many hours a day in combing the German press, checking the German radio, conferring with Nazi officials, and going to party meetings. It was surprising and sometimes consternating to find that, notwithstanding the opportunities I had to learn the facts and despite one's inherent distrust of what one learned from Nazi sources, a steady diet over the years of falsifications and distortions made a certain impression on one's mind and often misled it. No one who has not lived for years in a totalitarian land can possibly conceive how difficult it is to escape the dread consequences of a regime's calculated and incessant propaganda. Often in a German home or office or sometimes in a casual conversation with a stranger in a restaurant, a beer hall, a cafe, I would meet with the most outlandish assertions from seemingly educated and intelligent persons. It was obvious that they were parroting some piece of nonsense they had heard on the radio or read in the newspapers. Sometimes one was tempted to say as much, but on such occasions one was met with such a stare of incredulity, such a shock of silence, as if one had blasphemed the Almighty, that one realized how useless it was even to try to make contact with a mind which had become warped and for whom the facts of life had become what Hitler and Goebbels, with their cynical disregard for truth, said they were.”
In his diaries from 1940, Shirer recorded a vivid case: On the night of August 28, 1940, British bombers killed some Nazis for the first time ever in their bombing of Berlin. Goebbels ordered the newspaper to condemn the British for their “atrocity” of attacking unarmed children and women in Berlin. He asked the newspapers to instill the notion that Nazi fighters only attacked British military targets, whereas the “British pirates,” taking orders from Churchill, had focused their attacks on non-military targets. Thus, Goebbels successfully deceived many Germans. A nurse once asked Shirer, who was being treated at a hospital on August 31, 1940, “Why did they do it?” Shirer told her, “Because you bombed London.” The nurse rebutted, “Yes, but we only attacked military targets, while the Brits bombed our homes.” In Shirer’s words, this common German woman was “a living demonstration for the effectiveness of Goebbels’ propaganda.”
Fabricating and Spreading Lies Are Specialties of the Communist Party
In December 1989, the then Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian visited the United States to speak at a university. When asked about the Tiananmen Square Massacre earlier that year, Chi stated publicly, “Not a single person died at Tiananmen Square.” The entire room burst into an uproar of laughter.
14 years later, in the Spring of 2003, after the news had been hidden from the public for some time, SARS began to spread widely in China and was developing into an epidemic that threatened the lives of the whole world. At this critical moment, Zhang Wenkang, the then minister of the Chinese Health Department, announced at an April 4 news conference that SARS was under control in China. He announced that there were only “12 SARS cases in Beijing, with three deaths.” A few days later on April 19, Dr. Jiang Yanyong of the 301 Hospital furnished his testimony of the truth to the media: By April 3, the 301 Hospital alone had admitted 60 SARS patients, six of whom had died, exceeding the numbers previously announced by Zhang Wenkang.
In the history of the CCP, lies from people like Chi Haotian and Zhang Wenkang have come to be commonplace. Examining the CCP’s nearly 100-year history since its founding, one can say that it has never stopped lying, and that it has lied about everything. The history of the CCP is nothing but a history of lies.
The war against the Japanese invasion of China was clearly fought and won under the leadership of leader Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists, but the CCP’s lies say that the war was won solely by CCP efforts alone. Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalists were clearly the main force in fighting the Japanese, but the CCP slandered them for not fighting.
Jin Richeng in North Korea initiated the Korean war against Li Chengwan. But Mao Zedong claimed, “The ambitious American wolves are attempting to grab our Andong (South Korean City) and the three Northeastern provinces. They will never cease in their attempts to annihilate us. North Korea’s Jin Richeng was attacked by Li Chengwan.”
“The Great Famine” was clearly a man-made disaster caused by the CCP; Mao Zedong lied, saying that it was a natural disaster.
The Cultural Revolution was obviously a power struggle within the CCP; Mao Zedong lied, saying that it was an important task that was needed to avoid fighting against the revisionism.
The Tiananmen Square Massacre was clearly a patriotic movement for democracy, but the CCP smeared it as an “anti-revolutionary riot.”
The CCP's staged Tiananmen “Self-Immolation” hoax is the culmination of its history of lies.
The self-immolation at Tiananmen Square on January 23, 2001, was broadcast repeatedly by Chinese official media, and it quickly spread around the world. The CCP claimed with conviction that the self-immolators were Falun Gong practitioners.
Many people took the message from the CCTV broadcast at face value. But overseas experts found that the incident was actually staged by those whose sole purpose was to defame Falun Gong. When the video was played in slow motion and examined carefully, it clearly revealed that Liu Chunhua was hit on the head and fell at the same time that the flames on her were extinguished. The baton-shaped object was clearly visible as it quickly bounced up and fell to the ground. So who attacked her? If one freezes the frame, one can see that a man in an overcoat was standing in a position to attack.
Tiananmen Square is not equipped with any fire extinguishers, and the police do not carry fire extinguishers when they patrol. How is it possible that four officers with fire extinguishers appeared so quickly around Liu Chunlin after the incident began?
The official media stated: “The 12-year-old girl Liu Siying, who was seriously injured from the fire, had her trachea severed.” But what people saw on the news broadcast was Li Siying talking normally to reporters. A U.S. medical doctor said after watching the show, “It is impossible for a person who has just undergone an operation to repair a severed trachea to speak in such as short time.”
The official media also reported that Wang Jindong was burned seriously. However, the Sprite bottle on his lap that held gasoline remained intact, and his hair was basically unscathed. His sitting and hand positions were inconsistent with those of a Falun Gong practitioner’s. In front of the camera, a policeman stood on Wang’s right hand side and did not show any urgency when extinguishing the fire. He held the fire blanket as though he was posing for the camera. The Sound Characterization Lab at Taiwan University also compared the voice of Wang Jindong from three episodes of “Focus Interview” and determined that Wang Jindong's voice in episode one of the interviews was different from the Wang Jingong voice in the other two episodes.
Obviously, someone carefully planned and directed this “self-immolation” incident to defame Falun Gong. Who could that be? The International Education Development Organization summarized a report that they submitted to the United Nations in August 2001 titled Tiananmen Square: “We conclude from the recorded videos that the Tiananmen Square self-immolation was staged by the Chinese government.”
In November 2003, “False Fire,” an English documentary, while carefully adhering to the facts, analyzed all the suspicious points in the self-immolation incident. The video was awarded a prize in the 51st Columbus International Film and Video Festival.
Following the logic of the Nazis, the CCP's will overweighs everything else. As long as it is beneficial to the Party, it is okay to lie whenever convenient. Slander and lies are not shameful; on the contrary, lying is honorable. Hence, lies are ubiquitous in any country under totalitarian reign.
Famous scholar Chen Kuide made an insightful and thorough comparison between fascist and communist rule: Both are enthusiastic and good at telling lies. In his preface to The Lies of the Red Dynasty he wrote, “Fascism and communism were both maintained by violence and lies ('guns and pens' in Mao Zedong’s words). But to look deeper, one sees the ways in which communism operates are more elaborate and deceitful. They even dare to resort to moral calls. One can say that communism is an ideology that has reached the peak of falsehood in history. In other words, what the communists rely on is a carefully orchestrated system of lies. Whereas the language used by the fascists were much less refined and did not constitute a system.” (*)
Therefore, in some sense, communism's dependence on lies exceeds its dependence on violence.
