Zhongwei City Court in Ningxia Delays Trial Fearing Lawyer’s Defense

Sept. 20, 2012 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Ningxia

(Minghui.org) Fearing a strong defense from the defense attorney, the Shapotou District Court of Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, delayed the trial of Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Sun Jianfeng, which was originally scheduled for August 10, 2012.

Before the trial on August 10, some local residents received an invitation to attend the trial in which lawyer Wang Yajun from Beijing would defend Mr. Sun. On August 10, some people showed up at the courthouse, but were told the trial had been rescheduled and the date would be announced later.

Mr. Sun Jianfeng, 40, worked at the Yingchuan Power Supply Section of the Lanzhou Railway Bureau. On March 30, 2012, he and Ms. Huang Yuxia were visiting Ms. Chang Xiuer when police officer Li Cunshan, from the Zhongwei City Domestic Security Unit, along with other police officers, broke into Ms. Chang Xiuer’s home and arrested the three. The police also illegally searched the home and confiscated a computer, a printer, and other personal belongings. The three people were then interrogated at the police department. Officer Li Cunshan handcuffed Ms. Huang Yuxia and viciously beat her. He tortured her using a tiger bench and slandered Falun Gong and Falun Gong's Master. That evening, Li Cunshan and other officers searched Ms. Huang Yuxia’s home and took her computer, printer, and other belongings.

While the three practitioners were detained at the Zhongwei Police Department, they were taken to a local hospital for physical examinations. Ms. Huang Yuxia did not pass the physical requirements for detention, so she was released on the evening of March 31. Ms. Chang Xiuer was also released. Mr. Sun, however, is still being detained, and four months have now passed.

On July 11, the Shapotou District Procuratorate Office charged Mr. Sun with “undermining law enforcement via a cult organization.” The Shapotou District Court then approved lawyer Wang Yajun to handle Mr. Sun's defense and the trail date was set for August 10. But the trial was delayed at the last minute. According to sources, the court tried to pressure Wang's law firm by going its superior agency.

Mr. Sun Jianfeng had been illegally imprisoned four times in the past for requesting justice for Falun Gong. He was subjected to many kinds of torture, including slave labor, forced feeding, freezing, solitary confinement, and being “hung up in the air” for 72 days. When Mr. Sun was released from solitary confinement where he was “hung up in the air” for 72 days straight, he looked like he had just come out of a jungle. His hair was long and messy, and he looked as if he was in a trance. The back of his jacket was torn, and every layer of his pants was worn out. His feet, legs, and knees could not bear any weight, his toes were deformed, and the bottoms of his feet had a thick layer of callus. He was bedridden for over two months before he could walk again. His wrists still have the scars from being handcuffed.

We appeal to all Chinese who have a sense of justice to pay attention to this case.
