Mr. Liu lived in Buchengmen in the Xicheng District. His parents are both over 80 years old and live with his family. He is the oldest son in the family, so his parents, as well as his wife and son, depend on him.

Since 2001, he has been taken to forced labor camps twice. This upset his family terribly and hurt his son, who was still a child. In 2004, in the Tuanhe Forced Labor Camp in Beijing, Mr. Liu was deprived of sleep for 18 days and nights. His hair turned grey, his feet and legs became swollen, and he started to lose his memory. He was also violently beaten with a plastic bench by prisoners egged on by the guards until the bench finally broke.

On the night of August 2, 2012, police from the Domestic Security Bureau in the Haidian District broken into Mr. Liu's home and arrested him again. They took away his computer and cell phone. His family, who were heartbroken, went all over the place to find out about him. They asked why the police had arrested him, but the police station, the Haidian Detention Station, and the judges all avoided the family and refused to answer their questions.
