Shandong Pingdu Court Postpones Trial of Falun Gong Practitioner Mr. Wang Guangwei to Avoid Public Scrutiny

Sept. 7, 2012 |   By Minghui correspondent in Hebei Province, China

(Minghui.org) On July 21, the Pingdu Court informed the family of Mr. Wang Guangwei that the illegal trial of Mr. Wang would commence at 2 p.m. on July 27. However, four days later, on July 25, the Pingdu Court postponed the hearing. It is believed that they feared that Beijing lawyers Dong Qianyong and Lan Zhixue's defence of Wang Guangwei would show the illegality of their actions.

Mr. Wang Guangwei, Falun Gong practitioner of Pingdu City, Shandong Province, was falsely accused on March 14, 2012. He was arrested by police of Landi Town, Pingdu City and his home was ransacked. On the night of the arrest, police officer Liu Jie tortured Mr. Wang. He pushed him to the ground, stomped on his head, kicked him in the thigh and hit him in the face for about an hour. Liu then took him to the Pingdu Detention Center. Pingdu City Procuratorate approved the arrest on July 13, charging Mr. Wang with “using a cult organization to undermine the implementation of law.” The case was transferred to the Pingdu Court on July 14, where Mr. Wang is facing an illegal trial.

Mr. Wang's family hired lawyers from Beijing to defend him and sent an open letter to the local populace:

Greetings!

Do you know why Falun Gong has spread to more than 100 countries in the world, and is only being suppressed in China? Why is Falun Gong still being practiced after 13 years of persecution? Why are more and more lawyers defying the Chinese regime's pressure to not defend Falun Gong practitioners? We sincerely invite you to attend the trial to be held on July 27!

Important information about the case:

Mr. Wang Guangwei, male, villager of Wangjiazhuang Village, Landi Town, Pingdu City

On March 14, 2012, Mr. Wang was arrested by police from the Landi Town Police Station and his home was ransacked. The Pingdu City Procuratorate approved the arrest on July 13, charging him with “using a cult organization to undermine the implementation of law.”

Mr. Wang has been an honest, good and law-abiding citizen. He always thinks first of others, is kind to people, doesn't undermine the law, nor is he affiliated with a cult. Under existing Chinese law, Mr. Wang Guangwei has not committed any crime. However, the Pingdu Public Security Bureau has illegally detained him and has not adhered to any legal process when arresting him.

Therefore, we are asking, who is abusing their power and violating the law? Who is undermining the implementation of law? Well-known lawyers from Beijing will help explain the case for us in court.

Please pay prompt attention to the matter!

The above was forwarded to local cell phones and the notice was posted all over the area. This is the first time that lawyers are pleading “innocent” for Falun Gong practitioners in that area. This created a big stir among the local people.

The notice riled up the Pingdu police, because they were on the forefront of persecuting practitioners, as well as the 610 Office that controlled the proceedings. After 7 p.m. on July 24, staff from the Pingdu 610 Office entered Landi Town and asked three village cadres if they had received the invitation, and then proceeded to inquire in other villages.

After 8 a.m. on July 25, 4 to 5 police officers from the Landi Police Station broke into Mr. Wang's home, confiscated a pamphlet, and arrested his son. They demanded that he give them his cell phone number, tell them the whereabouts of his mother, who did the farm work for them, and so on. The same day, a special village cadres meeting was held in Wanjia, Landi and nearby townships. Every cadre was asked to find the source of the notice and who had received the notice.

At the same time, Liu Jie and police officers from the Domestic Security Division initiated a mass arrest of practitioners.

On July 23, Zhugou Town practitioners Guo Xiuhua, Zhang Xingmei and Ding Li were arrested at Ding Li's home in Shilouruan Village, by Liu Baoguo from Zhugou, Liu Jie from Pingdu City Domestic Security Division and Zhugou police.

Around 9:30 a.m. on July 24, practitioners Wang Huanzhong and Li Li, husband and wife from Dianqian Village, Pingdu Development Zone were arrested for distributing the notice to local people.

Fearing that local people would attend the trial, hear the defense of Mr. Wang Guangwei, and expose its crimes in persecuting Falun Gong, the Pingdu 610 Office had the trial postponed. The hearing date is unknown at this time.
