How I Let Go of Half a Million Yuan in a Property Dispute

Sept. 22, 2013 |   By a Falun Gong practitioner in China

(Minghui.org) I would like to share how I was able to prevail over a land dispute because of the teachings of Falun Gong. If it had not been for Falun Gong, I would not have been able to let it go.

The morality in Chinese society has been rapidly declining since the Chinese Communist Party destroyed the traditional Chinese culture and moral values. I am a single mother with three children. I bought a home for my son 19 years ago when he got married. I completed all of the paperwork, but didn't get the house title from the seller.

I usually trust people until they prove themselves to be untrustworthy. So, I did not insist on getting the title when the seller claimed he had lost it. As long as my son could move in, I was okay with it, since I had already paid for the house.

But then the seller started to feel remorseful about his sale of the property. He demanded that I give 50 square meters of the land back to him.

I struggled about how to resolve this issue. It was the most difficult and painful situation I'd ever experienced.

I reminded myself that I am a Falun Gong practitioner and that Teacher has taught us that nothing happens coincidentally. There must be a reason. Maybe I had incurred a karmic debt to the seller in a previous life and it was time for me to pay him back this way. On the other hand, 50 square meters of land cost nearly half a million yuan. How could I just let it go?

For two weeks, I was unable to study the Fa, eat or sleep. This conflict kept haunting me at every waking moment, until I realized that I was not conducting myself like a Falun Gong practitioner. I resolved to rectify myself to be in line with the Fa.

I asked myself whether it was my true self or my acquired notions that were troubled by the situation. When I identified that only my human notions, and not my true self, were involved, I started studying the Fa again and tried to rectify these notions according to the Fa.

Teacher said:

“Sometimes, you think that something should be yours, and others also tell you that it is yours. Actually, it is not. You may believe that it is yours, but in the end it is not yours. Through this, it can be seen whether you can give it up. If you cannot let it go, it is an attachment. This method must be used to get rid of your attachment to self-interest. This is the issue. Because everyday people are not enlightened to this principle, they will all compete and fight before profits.” (Zhuan Falun)

When I read the above passage, I felt as though Teacher was addressing me directly.

Teacher also said:

“For instance, one day his workplace gave out an apartment unit. The supervisor said: "All those in need of the apartment come here to describe your conditions and explain why each of you needs the apartment." Everyone provided their own reasons while this person did not say a word. In the end, the supervisor found that this person had a greater need for it than others, and that the apartment should be given to him. Other people claimed: "No, the apartment shouldn’t be given to him. It should be given to me because I need the apartment badly." This person said: "Then you can go ahead and take it." An everyday person would see him as foolish. Some people knew that he was a practitioner and asked him: "As a practitioner, you don’t want anything. What do you want?" He responded, "I’ll take whatever others don’t want." Actually, he was not foolish at all and was quite bright. Only in terms of personal, vested interests, would he be like this. He believed in following the course of nature.” (Zhuan Falun)

This example illustrated how I should respond to the situation as a cultivator.

Teacher said:

“We have also said that if every one of us cultivates his inner self, examines his own xinxing to look for the causes of wrongdoing so as to do better next time, and considers others first when taking any action, human society would become better and ethical standards would again rise.” (Zhuan Falun)

I asked myself if I had put myself in the shoes of the seller at all. It had not been easy for him to build the house, and it has since risen in value significantly. He must have felt more terrible about the transaction than I did about the conflict.

I resolved the dispute peacefully. The real estate attorney even commented, “I have never seen anyone resolving a property dispute without any conflict.”

It's all thanks to Falun Gong that I was able to calm down and let go of self-interest.

My understanding is limited by my present level of cultivation. Please kindly point out anything inappropriate.
