Her husband, Mr. Xiong Huifeng, near 80 years old, was arrested on August 26, 2014 for practicing Falun Gong, an ancient cultivation practice persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999. His arrest was approved by the local procuratorate on September 9. The authorities are attempting to put him on trial.
The accomplished elderly couple who are both practitioners, have been arrested multiple times in the past 15 years. Mr. Xiong had been sentenced to three years of forced labor in 2000.
Once a passionate and successful space scientist, 78-year-old Ms. Liu has now suffered a mental breakdown after she was overcome with anxiety due to years of persecution.
Terrified, she often told her daughter, “The police are coming to get your father again,” despite the fact that he had already been arrested.
Constantly worrying for her husband, she couldn't sleep at night and was emaciated. Her daughter quit her job in order to look after her. Sympathetic for this troubled family, their neighbors extended their help.
