Elderly Hebei Man Arrested, Faces Second Prison Term

Oct. 29, 2014 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Hebei Province

(Minghui.org) One month after a 71-year-old Nanpi County man was taken into custody, the local Procuratorate approved his arrest and made preparations for a conviction.

Mr. Chang Shouxuan (常寿轩) and 42 people from surrounding areas were holding a conference to share their experiences of practicing Falun Gong on August 17, 2014, when they were raided by police from Cangzhou City.

Some practitioners were released shortly after the arrest, but Mr. Chang remains detained.

After the local Procuratorate approved the illegal arrest of Mr. Chang and seven other practitioners on September 22, 2014, the police worked to build their case against him.

A group of agents from Domestic Security Division soon descended on Mr. Chang's home. Officer Li Jingqin confiscated more than 300 yuan in cash, while other agents ripped all the decorations off the wall in their search for “evidence.”

Mr. Chang is facing a possible second prison term, having served three years from 2000 to 2003 for practicing Falun Gong.

Arrest and Imprisonment in 2000

Mr. Chang and his wife were illegally arrested in 2000, along with 13 other practitioners, who were reading Falun Gong books at their house. Ms. Chang's brothers were told to pay 6,000 yuan for her release, while Mr. Chang was sentenced to a three-year prison term by the Nanpi Court shortly after the arrest.

Mr. Chang appealed to the Cangzhou Intermediate Court, but the judge upheld the original verdict. He was forced to do hard labor for one year and two months in the Nanpi Detention Center before being sent to Tangshan Prison.

Mr. Chang's then-14-year-old-son was left alone at home during his imprisonment. To prevent other practitioners from contacting Mr. Chang's family, a village soldier was instructed to guard his house.

Falun Gong Turns Mr. Chang into a Better Person

Mr. Chang started practicing Falun Gong in 1998, and followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance to become a better person.

A few years ago, his house underwent renovation and his sister-in-law insisted on occupying a plot of his land in front of his house. He gave it to her.

However, his sister-in-law was unsatisfied and placed a pile of firewood at his door to irritate him. This made it very inconvenient for anyone who entered or left Mr. Chang's house. Mr. Chang was not angry, didn't quarrel with his sister-in-law, and left the pile of firewood where it was. A likely conflict was resolved due to Mr. Chang's tolerance.
