72-Year-Old Woman Sentenced to Four Years for Upholding Her Belief

Nov. 26, 2014 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Henan Province, China

(Minghui.org) A 72-year-old woman from Pingdingshan City was sentenced to four years in prison.

Ms. Sun Wenying was illegally arrested on May 14, 2014, near the Shuangfeng Supermarket by officers from the Guangming Road Police Station. The police also ransacked her home.

She was taken to the Pingdingshan Detention Center the next day. The detention center refused to admit her because she failed the physical exam. The police had to release her. However, the police have kept harassing her and her family over the last several months. She was ordered to have multiple physical exams, had to appear before the procuratorate and the court several times, and was tried twice.

Ms. Sun is the sole caretaker of her husband, who is ill and has mental problems, and she is needed at home. Her son asked the court for leniency, but the court rejected the arguments.

She called her son on November 14, telling him that she would be home in the afternoon. However, she didn't return home. Her son learned that she had been sentenced to four years in prison and is being held at a detention center. He went to the detention center, but the guards refused to let him see his mother or to give her clothes.

After the communist regime banned the practice in July 1999, she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. Her name was put on a blacklist and she was often harassed.
