(Minghui.org) Ms. Chen Ping, a Harvard University graduate, is facing an illegal trial for her belief in Falun Gong, after six months of detention. Her lawyer was given less than two weeks' notice that her trial was scheduled for 2 p.m. on April 17, 2014.
Also on trial is Mr. Wang Chao who was followed and arrested by police after he visited Ms. Chen’s home.
Ms. Chen Ping and Mr. Wang Chao were illegally arrested in September 2013. The Xuhui District Procuratorate approved their arrests on November 1, 2013. The police submitted evidence to the procuratorate on December 18, after which the case was submitted to the Xuhui District Court on January 14, 2014.
Prior Arrest of Ms. Chen Ping
Ms. Chen Ping graduated with a master's degree from Harvard University in 2002. Prior to her arrest, she worked as a medical adviser at a hospital in Ningbo City.
Ms. Chen Ping was reported to the police in July 2012 for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was arrested by officers from Changning Domestic Security Division and detained for 15 days. She was released after her family paid the authorities 50,000 yuan.
Prior Arrest of Mr. Wang Chao
Mr. Wang Chao is from Baoding, Hebei Province. He graduated from Helongjiang Bayi Agriculture University in 2007.
When Mr. Wang returned to his brother's home in Hebei in May 2012, Shanghai police followed and arrested him. He was taken back to Shanghai and detained for 15 days.
