(Minghui.org) On June 18, 2014, the Qinghe District Court in Huai'an City conducted an illegal trial against Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zuo Kangwei. Her husband, Wang Shixin, entered a not-guilty plea for her. He gave strong and sound arguments in her defense, causing the judge to abruptly call an adjournment giving the prosecutor a chance to present a closing argument.
It was Ms. Zuo's second trial at the Qinghe District, but only two of her relatives were permitted to attend.
During the trial, Mr. Wang asked that her handcuffs be removed, but the request was denied by presiding judge Zhang Zuchao.
Ms. Zuo testified that she was beaten by police officers after she was illegally arrested and taken to the police station. She also overheard a conversation between a police officer and a security guard that "arresting a Falun Gong practitioner gets one a 5,000 yuan bonus."
Mr. Wang questioned the evidence presented by prosecutor Kuan Lili. Kuan claimed that the collected evidence (Falun Gong brochures and photocopies of paper currency with Falun Gong messages written on them) had been verified by Qinghe District 610 Office.
Mr. Wang pointed out that the 610 Office is an extra-legal organization that is not qualified to provide technical or statutory appraisal.
During his defense, Mr. Wang argued that Ms. Zuo was simply an ordinary woman who practices the Falun Gong exercises to stay healthy. She tries to be a good person according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.
He also pointed out that Falun Gong is practiced in more than 100 countries and regions around the world. People have the freedom to practice in all counties except China.
However, Mr. Wang was repeatedly interrupted by presiding judge Zhang Zuchao during his defense. Then the judge hastily called a recess. The prosecutor was not given time to make a final statement. Appearing dejected, he muttered that he should not have accepted a Falun Gong case, and left in a hurry.
