Ms. Ma Yan's Illegal Arrest

June 9, 2014 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Yunnan Province, China

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Ma Yan, a retired worker from the Kunming Power Plant, was illegally arrested by officers from the Wuhua District Domestic Security Division in Kunming City on April 20, 2014. Ms. Ma is currently being held at the Kunming No. 1 Detention Center.

Ms. Ma's niece, Ms. Zhang Ji, also a Falun Gong practitioner and a teacher at the Dianchi Experimental Elementary School, was arrested in Shilin Autonomous County on April 19, 2014. Police officer Ma Yunhui notified Ms. Ma to pick up her niece's personal belongings at the Hongshan Police Station the next day.

Ms. Ma showed up at the Hongshan Police Station with her brother and his wife, but her niece was not there. They were then told to go to the Jiaoling Police Station instead. As soon as they arrived at the station, Ma Yunhui and two policemen took Ms. Ma to the interrogation room. Four plainclothes officers from the Wuhua Police Station also showed up, and demanded Ms. Ma to cooperate. One of them wrote a subpoena in the room.

Seeing that Ms. Ma was being interrogated, her brother quickly called the mayor's office. The receptionist said, “I will notify the person in charge to investigate this case.”

At around 9:30 p.m., inspector Zhao from the Wuhua Police Station contacted the relatives on behalf of the mayor. Zhao said, “Policemen summoned Ms. Ma according to legal procedures.” Ms. Ma's brother asked, “Was the conduct of the policemen legal in this case?” Zhao replied, “It depends. If you have any objections, you can file an administrative litigation against the policemen.”

Ms. Ma's family didn't give up and asked the policemen to release her. The officers said they could not release her and were going to take her to the Hongshan Police Station. The family members waited outside of the police station and heard Ms. Ma scream, “I want to go home! You liars!” Two security guards grabbed her by the arms and dragged her out of the station. Ms. Ma's brother ran toward her, but the police pushed him away. They warned him, “Do not obstruct our duties!”

Ms. Ma's sister-in-law followed the guards as they dragged her to the Hongshan Police Station. They found out later that she was held at the Kunming No. 1 Detention Center that evening, and the officers were going to send the detention notice to the family by mail.
