(Minghui.org) Shi Liandong, head of the Domestic Security Division in Sanhe City, Hebei Province, and more than 10 police officers broke into the private clinic owned by my husband, Dr. Kang Jingtai. They illegally arrested both my husband and me.
The police took three PCs, including the PC that my son used for his school work, my son's MP5 player, my car, and other personal belongings.
My husband's blood pressure shot up to 220, and he was very weak. At first the Sanhe City Detention Center refused to take him because of his condition. However, Gao Lijun from the city police department ordered the detention center accept him despite his life-threatening condition.
1. Appealing for My Husband after His Arrest
After I was released the next day, I got the detention notice that my husband was detained for “Disrupting the implementation of the law.” My family is worried about him, and my son hasn't smiled once since his dad was arrested.
A few days after my husband was arrested, a patient in the clinic heard the news and said, “It can't be true! Dr. Kang is such a good doctor. Who would arrest him?” When we suggested he transfer to another clinic for his treatment, he said, “I only trust Dr. Kang. Give me five of the same prescriptions he gave me before. After I finish taking them, maybe Dr. Kang will be back.”
By the middle of May, my husband was sent to the Langfan Brainwashing Center. I decided to appeal for him.
2. Fifteen Years of Persecution
Over the 15 years since the CCP started to persecute Falun Gong, my husband has been arrested six times, sent to brainwashing centers twice, and subjected to forced labor for two years. Our family has been harassed, threatened, and had funds extorted from us several times.
Last October after my father-in-law passed away, my mother-in-law became depressed and her health declined. My husband visited her every day and took care of her. When she couldn't see her son for several days, she was overwhelmed with worry and couldn't eat or sleep well. Ten days after her son was arrested, she passed away.
Many people have been deceived by the CCP's lies. Living in such a tense and discriminatory atmosphere, we are always worried and depressed. Although he often faces injustice, he has no regrets and does not complain. He believes in Falun Gong and treats others with kindness.
3. Believing in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance Made My Husband a Better Person
My mother-in-law often told me that Jingtai was very kind even when he was young. He was an excellent student. After he graduated from Hebei Medical University, he worked in the Sanhe City Chinese Medical Hospital.
My husband has always been kind and calm. One time, a highly irritated patient spit in his face. He didn't say anything and just calmly wiped it off.
To improve his skills, he bought about 350 medical books and studied them. If patients had difficulty paying their medical bills, he often reduced the fees and, for some, just charged them at cost.
Once a patient came to our home seeking medical help. He was poor and only had 100 yuan with him. My husband selected inexpensive but effective medicines for him. The patient was moved and said he was a truly good person.
One patient had heart surgery but had difficulty paying the bills. My husband still gave him the best treatment. The patient owed us over 6000 yuan in unpaid medical bills. Dr. Kang never pressed him to pay.
My husband is not only a good doctor but also a good father and a good husband. Our son, Kang Xinyu, is well-behaved and has earned many awards. Dr. Kang has devoted a great deal of effort to our son, focusing on his personality growth and teaching him to respect his teachers and care for his classmates. He never imposes his own will on the child. When the boy was upset because of bad grades, my husband encouraged him.
4. Sentenced to Two Years of Forced Labor Just after Our Son Was Born
Since Falun Gong was introduced in China in 1992, millions of people have been benefited mentally and physically. My husband started to practice in 1994 and benefited a lot. He went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong twice and was arrested and detained in the Sanhe Detention Center.
In November 2000, he was sentenced to two years of forced labor. When the local detention center refused to accept him, police officer Liu Hui even tried to bribe the detention center officials with wine and cigarettes. After this failed, they sent him to Wanzhuang Forced Labor Camp in Langfang City.
When my husband was arrested in 2000, our son was only three weeks old.
5. My Husband's Experiences in the Labor Camp
My husband told me there was a popular ballad in the labor camp: “We pick endless soybeans, sew endless balls, grab endless lice, and eat endless corn buns.”
Life in the labor camp is dark and grueling. Getting up at 5 a.m. and going to bed after midnight, practitioners work 19 hours a day. Sometimes, they were only allowed to sleep one hour. The cell was not just a place to sleep, but for work as well. Before they went to bed at midnight, the head of the cell would yell and beat those who didn't finish the daily quota and might force them to continue working.
My husband was assigned to sew soccer balls. There are 32 pieces in each soccer ball, and 40 stitches are needed for each piece. One ball requires 1280 stitches. Each person was required to sew at least 10 balls and sometimes more than 20 balls per day.
Falun Gong practitioners were not only forced to do slave labor but were also subjected to brainwashing. My husband was persecuted many times by the guards in the No.2 Division, including Guo Shenli, the division head.
Once two guards didn't allow him to sleep. In order to upset him, one of them said, “On the Minghui website, it said the guards in a northeastern labor camp pierced the nipples of female practitioners with metal wires. Do you think it's true?”
My husband said, “Before I was sent here, if someone told me there was a place in the world whose regular working hours were 19 hours per day, I wouldn't have believed it. Now that I've been here, I know it's true.” The guards stopped talking.
The long term suffering in the labor camp deteriorated my husband's health. He had severe anemia with only a little more than 3 grams of hemoglobin (about13 grams is normal for a healthy person). His face became sallow and his hair turned white, but he was still required to do the slave labor.
Because of anemia, he often had palpitations and fatigue and was dizzy. He was unable to eat. We demanded medical parole for him, but since we didn't bribe Guo Shengli, head of No. 2 Division, he refused us.
My husband described the tortures in the labor camp. Falun Gong practitioners were often handcuffed, tied up, and beaten. The guards instigated the prisoners to torture practitioners. Zhang Xuezhi, a practitioner in the same division with my husband, was repeatedly beaten. As a result his eardrums were damaged and his chest was covered with bruises. The screams of practitioners being tortured was often heard in the camp. The guards would raise the volume on the radio to cover up their crimes.
Because my husband refused to give up his belief, the camp staff refused to allow his family members to visit him. One winter day in 2000, we were finally allowed to see him, but only for a few minutes. My sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and I went to the labor camp. When I finally saw my husband with his shaved head and skinny body, which made him look like someone else, I could not stop weeping.
