The Power of Compassion

Aug. 25, 2014 |   By a practitioner in Shaanxi Province, China

(Minghui.org) The compassion of practitioners can be really effective in changing the attitudes of everyday people. I experienced this during an encounter with a police officer.

The first day of fall it rained, but great weather followed. Many people came out after the rain stopped to enjoy the cool weather. It was a good opportunity to clarify the facts about Falun Gong, so I went out with a bag of informational materials.

As I was distributing the materials, a tall gentleman in a white shirt passed by. I caught up with him and said, “Sir, here is some information about the downfall of high ranking Chinese officials. Please take a look.” He took it with a smile and started reading.

About 15 minutes later, he returned it to me. He said furiously, “Do you practice Falun Gong? Do you know who I am? I work for the city police department. Do you need to see my work card?”

My heart was not moved. I calmly thought of what Teacher said:“Compassion is the Divine’s eternal state.” (“Why Do You Reject It?” from Hong Yin III)

I asked Teacher for help. My heart remained calm. I smiled at him and quietly watched him bluster. He took several minutes to calm down.

I said to him gently, “Why would I need to see your work card? I believe you. I also believe that you are a very fortunate and kind police officer, and you have the opportunity to learn the facts.” His knowing side started waking up. He looked down at the ground and said quietly, “You can go now. I'll let you go today.” He then left.

I was happy for him and his right choice. I said to him loudly, “You’re a kind police officer. You will be rewarded!” He turned back and waved at me with a smile on his face.

A seemingly dangerous situation was resolved, and the onlookers left. My eyes were filled with tears of joy. I thanked Teacher in my heart. With the great compassion and tolerance of a divine, I was able to stay calm and face the adversity with compassion.

Human beings' notions can be changed. It all depends on how you change them. Their kind sides can be awakened, depending on how you encourage them. I always remember Teacher’s words:

“Validate the Fa with rationality, clarify the truth with wisdom, spread the Fa and save people with mercy ...” (“Rationality” from Essentials for Further Advancement II)
