Northeastern Military Doctor Protests Illegal Trial with Hunger Strike

Sept. 13, 2014 |   By a Minghui correspondent from Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) Dr. Zhao Chenglin (赵成林) protested his illegal trial with a hunger strike. The court session on August 27 had to be rescheduled because he was very weak, barely conscious and could not walk on his own.

The 53-year-old former military doctor in Benxi, Liaoning Province, was arrested on March 26 for distributing Shen Yun DVDs in a park. Domestic Security police of the Mingshan District Police Department hit him on the head and knocked him out. They dragged him, unconscious, into a police car and took him to Benxi Detention Center.

Prior to the March arrest, Dr. Zhao was sentenced to 10 years in May 2002 and tortured at the Wafangdian Prison in Dalian.

Both Dr. Zhao and his wife Ms. Wang Lijuan (王丽娟) practice Falun Gong. Their son witnessed the arrest of his parents at elementary school age and spent 10 years without his father.

Dr. Zhao's first arrest occurred on May 28, 2001. Agents of the local 610 Office took him to Benxi Forced Labor Camp in July 2001. There he was subjected to rack torture and severe beatings, and hung up in the air with wrists handcuffed to the rails.

During the one year detention at the labor camp, Dr. Zhao managed to flee but was recaptured. At the time, Ms. Wang was detained and tortured at the Benxi Detention Center. Her father had just passed away due to grief. Their son was attending elementary school and living with Ms. Wang's mother.

In order to find Dr. Zhao's whereabouts, labor camp guards occupied the residence for over a week and threatened the grandmother to “cooperate with police” every night.
