(Minghui.org) “If everyone acted like Falun Gong practitioners and followed the principles Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, human society would become better. My client is innocent of any wrongdoing.” Ms. Ren Xiuqin's attorney said at her trial on June 5, 2015.
Ms. Ren Xiuqin, from Shenyang, was tried in the Shenbei New District Court, for handing out a Shenyun Performing Arts DVD to Shen Ying, a former Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official.
Ms. Ren was led into the courtroom in handcuffs and shackles at 9:00 a.m.
The prosecutor charged Ms. Ren with “undermining the implementation of law.”
“The Shenyun DVD that I gave to Shen Ying promotes Chinese traditional culture in its most elegant form. It has nothing to do with any treason or calumny. Your charges make no sense… The police ransacked my home without my presence. So you can not use the things you claim to have found in my home as evidence,” said Ms. Ren during her address.
She continued to say that she had become healthier by practicing Falun Gong, and that there was nothing wrong with practicing Falun Gong.
Her lawyer pointed out that China's Constitution protects freedom of belief and speech, and that no existing Chinese law states the practicing Falun Gong is illegal.
“My client is just a plain rural woman. She has neither power nor capability to undermine the implementation of law. She practices Falun Gong only to stay healthy,” the lawyer said.
The lawyer entered a not-guilty plea on behalf of Ms. Ren.
Ms. Shen was taken back to the detention center after the 1-hour court session.
Reported and Arrested
Ms. Ren had given a DVD to Shen Ying, a local former Communist Party official, on March 12, 2015. The DVD contained classic Chinese music and dance performed by the Shen Yun Performing Arts.
Shen took the DVD, asked her colleague Peng Zhen to follow Ms. Ren, and called the police to arrest her. Police ransacked Ms. Ren's home in the afternoon without her being present. Ms. Ren was taken to the Shenyang No. 1 Detention Center the next day.
The police used the Falun Gong books and other personal belongings confiscated from her home as evidence to charge her.
The Shenyang Political and Legal Affairs Committee called a special meeting to commend Shen and Peng for helping arrest Ms. Ren.
