Four local residents were tried by Hetang District Court on December 23, five months after they were arrested for distributing materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong.
Their lawyers defended their constitutional right to believe in and spread information about Falun Gong. They also requested the practitioners be released on medical parole due to their fragile physical condition. The judge rejected the request.
The four elderly practitioners remain in detention. Mr. Guo Wenxing is being held in the Zhuzhou No. 2 Detention Center, while his wife Ms. Liu Fangxiang, Ms. Zeng Xiyin, and Ms. Liu Baiying are being held at the Zhuzhou No. 1 Detention Center.

The Shenhe District Procuratorate recently approved the arrest of Mr. Liu Jiaze. This means he now faces a trial for his lawsuit against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin.
Two officers visited Mr. Liu on November 2 and asked why he sued Jiang. They left when Mr. Liu refused to sign their pre-filled out document.
The police returned the next morning, again requesting his signature. They took him to the police station when he refused to comply with their demand. Several officers later ransacked his home and videotaped the raid.
Mr. Liu remains at Shenhe District Detention Center.
Tonghua County Court recently tried two of seven local Falun Gong practitioners arrested in June 2015, for suing former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin.
Mr. Deng Yuqing's family hired a Beijing lawyer to defend him shortly after he was arrested. The Jilin Province Judicial Bureau, however, pressured its counterpart in Beijing to order the lawyer's firm to stop him from defending Mr. Deng. The lawyer insisted on representing Mr. Deng, but was told that any meeting with his client would require approval from the Jilin Provincial Judicial Bureau.
It is not clear if the lawyer was able to see Mr. Deng or if he was able to attend the trial and defend his client.
Two local residents were tried on December 28 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual belief system being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime.
Only three family members of each practitioner were allowed to attend the supposedly public trial. However, before they were allowed to enter the courthouse they had to say a statement which slandered Falun Gong.
The rest of Ms. Gao Yuhuan' and Ms. Jiang Yuling's loved ones were blocked from attending the trial. They stood outside in sub-zero temperatures for nearly seven hours while the hearing took place.
Mr. Shi Fulong and Mr. Wang Guangqi entered not guilty pleas for the two practitioners. The lawyers argued that it is their client's constitutional right to practice Falun Gong, and there have never been any laws which made practicing Falun Gong a crime. They said that the persecution had no legal basis from the onset, and they demanded that their clients be acquitted.
Judge Li Yanli adjourned the trial without issuing a verdict.
Ms. Gao was arrested on July 15, 2015, and Ms. Jiang was taken into custody one week later. Both women are now being held at Baoqing County Detention Center.
According to insiders, Donggang City Court issued guilty verdicts against 11 local Falun Gong practitioners on December 28. The heaviest sentence was 11 years.
Ms. Chen Ying'e was given 8 years. The exact sentences of the other practitioners remain are still being investigated.
All these practitioners were arrested on the same night in April 2015 and tried between December 7 and 15.
Ms. Dou Hongxia was tried on July 8 for practicing Falun Gong. It was learned that she was sentenced to four years of imprisonment and is now appealing the sentence.
Ms. Dou was arrested along with her husband at their carwash business in September 2014. Their home was later ransacked.
Huangdao District Court tried her in the Pudong Detention Center. She has been detained there since being arrested.
A few months after the trial, the same court held trials for several other local Falun Gong practitioners who were held in the same detention center. Wang Taojing was tried on October 13, and Qiao Junying on November 17. The court also scheduled a trial for Song Guixiang and her daughter Li Xue on December 1. The hearing was halted after the defense lawyers protested the court's violations of legal procedures.
