I’d like to share my understanding of the subordinate soul [Editor’s note: which is also translated as assistant consciousness, assistant spirit, assistant soul, and subconsciousness in various Fa lectures] in this 7-part series.
I have personally experienced various forms of interference that my subordinate soul imposed on my master soul [Editor’s note: which is also translated as main consciousness, main soul, and main spirit]. I have also witnessed some local practitioners being persecuted by their subordinate souls.
I write down what happened to me and a few of my local practitioners to serve as a reminder to everyone to be aware of hidden interference from subordinate souls.
Of course, I can only see the things shown to me at my level, and they are by no means the whole truth.
Practitioners should be guided only by the Fa—the truth of the vast universe—and not by the understanding or experience of another cultivator.
Ploys Obstructing the Master Soul
I have come to the understanding that subordinate souls have used many different approaches to harm master souls. One such approach is to prevent the master soul from fulfilling its assigned duty. This approach allows the subordinate soul to spirit away the gong of the master soul.
They use different tactics to do it. One is to make the master soul sleepy when practitioners study the Fa, do the exercises, and send righteous thoughts. This kind of sleepiness results from the psychotropics the subordinate souls have been administering to the master soul over a long period of time.
In our local area there is a mechanism that looks like a disc. Inside it are over a dozen confusing traps. Some practitioners are trapped inside and feel sleepy, while others develop attachments to lust, sentimentality, and sleep when they study the Fa, do the exercises, and send righteous thoughts.
There is also a mechanism that produces large quantities of psychotropic drugs and pills. When this mechanism is connected to a practitioner, the substance it produces can strengthen this practitioner's desires and make everyday people or even other practitioners feel attracted to the practitioner.
Another ruse the subordinate souls use is direct interference with the master soul. They bring fantasies from everyday people's lives to the master soul when the practitioner studies the Fa, does the exercises, and sends righteous thoughts.
Some practitioners may suddenly think about everyday chores, so they stop reading the Fa and tend to those things. Also, when they do the exercises or send righteous thoughts, stray thoughts may disturb them with all kinds of things.
Of course, there are other factors involved when practitioners cannot keep a calm mind, but the above is just one factor that disturbs the mind of a practitioner.
Master said:
“You can’t cultivate without this human body, so you have to cultivate here, at this human place, to change yourself. Sometimes, when you’re studying a Dafa book, you’re not concentrating, and your lips finish reading a passage yet your mind isn’t there. That’s because your subordinate consciousness (fu yishi) or other factors were at work. Your attention is present occasionally, only to disappear shortly after. If you have this problem often, then it’s the same as your giving up all these things and giving this Fa away to someone else. You can’t do that, and I don’t allow you to cultivate that way.” (Teaching the Fa at the Eastern U.S. Fa Conference)
Deception by the Subordinate Soul
Sometimes, subordinate souls try to control the master soul. The master soul will feel confused about a certain issue and give the subordinate soul the opportunity to control the body.
They will also use the master soul's debt karma to affect its actions. They use any kind of deception, so the master soul makes mistakes and fails to pass tests. The master soul will feel depressed, slack off, cultivate halfheartedly, or give up cultivation.
I also saw a few rather aggressive subordinate souls who beat the master soul. One practitioner has about eight subordinate souls who tried to control and attack the practitioner's body. They also instigated others to tyrannize the master soul.
There are also situations when the interference is less obvious. The subordinate souls surreptitiously create conflicts among practitioners. They may make practitioners mishear others or prevent practitioners from hearing important messages.
Once I asked a practitioner to send righteous thoughts at a certain time, but she never did. When I asked her about it later, she told me that she had not heard what I had said.
To resolve this disturbance, a practitioner must look within and stay unmoved by human attachments. Should the practitioner cultivate and let go of attachments, they will pass the tests.
Complex Family Interrelationships
I’ve noticed another arrangement by the old forces regarding practitioners from the same family. These practitioners’ subordinate souls collude with each other and bring about conflicts.
They prevent the practitioners’ master souls from enlightening to the Fa principles and work to reinforce their human notions and egotistical tendencies to create dissension. We have had many couples, both husbands and wives, fighting each other for years and failing to look inward for their own shortcomings.
Intricacy of Interrelationships from Past to Present
Subordinate souls can also aggravate the false appearance of sickness karma and thus trap the master soul in misery. Most of all, they can block help from or harm other practitioners.
When I was sending righteous thoughts to help practitioner C who was suffering sickness karma, another person who looked like C sat opposite me and said, “Mind your own business.” He raised his hand to slap my face. I knew that he was a subordinate soul and stopped him with my gong.
After I finished sending righteous thoughts, I told C that some of his subordinate souls were harming him. He believed me, but his family member, also a practitioner, did not believe me. She refuted me by quoting Master’s Fa, “The Assistant Spirit mainly tries its best to prevent one’s Main Spirit from committing wrongdoing.” (Zhuan Falun)
She asserted, “How can subordinate souls possibly harm the master soul?” No matter how I shared my understanding with her, she wouldn’t listen.
When I was doing the sitting meditation the next day, this family member appeared in my dimension and said, “Stop your interference. If you keep meddling in others' business, you will die in misery. Let me tell you a heavenly secret. Your death was arranged long ago, and you won't even know how you die.”
While meditating, I saw the history of this family through many reincarnations. The master souls of practitioner C and his family member shared the same origin, and so did their subordinate souls. There were karmic relationships between the master souls and the subordinate souls. In this life, the two practitioners’ subordinate souls joined forces to interfere with their master souls, aggregating C’s sickness symptoms and preventing his family member from enlightening to the Fa principles.
These subordinate souls had made an agreement among each other that, when one of them would face destruction, they would not sit idly by, but help each other. Their master souls also signed pacts to protect the subordinate souls. These master souls may have signed willingly or were tricked into doing so before they descended to the human world. However, it tells us that they had accepted and agreed to the old force arrangements.
Some of the master souls signed pacts to protect their own subordinate souls, and some master souls signed pacts to protect others' subordinate souls. Such pacts have enabled subordinate souls to commit harm without fear, and they have created trouble among cultivators and harmed practitioner C's body.
Fellow practitioners must strengthen their righteous thoughts, deny all arrangements by the old forces, and only follow Master's arrangements.
Subordinate Soul's Attack Results in Destruction
As the subordinate souls continued to commit harm, I eliminated some, which created interference for me.
When I was sending righteous thoughts with fellow practitioners, we all felt very sleepy. I noticed an image of practitioner D blowing some light yellow substance at us. I realized that it was a psychotropic substance that was interfering with us and that practitioner D's subordinate soul was causing interference.
I watched practitioner D and quietly told his subordinate soul in my mind, “Position yourself well. Do not interfere with our sending righteous thoughts.” However, this subordinate soul refused to listen and continued to create problems.
While sending righteous thoughts, I found that practitioner D's subordinate soul wanted to protect an evil being, so I turned my gong towards it and said, “If you protect this evil being, I'll eliminate you as well.” This subordinate soul told the evil being, “I can no longer protect you, as I was caught in the act.” I then eliminated the evil being.
After sending righteous thoughts, we started to study the Fa. Suddenly, I had a bad headache. I saw practitioner D looking at me. He turned to look elsewhere when he noticed that I looked at him, and my headache was gone. I realized that it was practitioner D's subordinate soul that was harming me. I continued to study the Fa. Within less than five minutes, I had a sharp chest pain. I turned to look at practitioner D and saw him staring at me. When he saw me looking at him, he turned his eyes away, and the pain in my heart lessened.
I decided to eliminate practitioner D's subordinate soul. It appeared and yelled, “I've also done a lot of things to rectify the Fa. How can you eliminate me?”
“You are persecuting the master soul,” I said. “Besides, you are strengthening the master soul's attachments so that he does not cultivate himself. You also interfere with our sending righteous thoughts while we eliminate the evils. You have been making trouble all this time. I have warned you many times. Have you listened? You're sitting here to make trouble and are doing things worse than the evil beings do. I cannot let you go for what you have done.”
I then saw this subordinate soul destroyed by righteous gods.
Subordinate Soul Recreation Mechanism
I calmly studied the Fa for over 40 minutes. Suddenly, I felt a pair of eyes staring at me. I raised my head and saw a mechanism recreating the subordinate soul. I had wondered about the fact that, even though I had eliminated some subordinate souls, after a while, they appeared again and continued to harm practitioners. I did not understand why they reappeared after I had eliminated them. Now I know it is because there is a mechanism that recreates them.
I also saw the scene at a certain level of this subordinate soul signing pacts with the old forces, accepting their arrangements.
At high levels, the old forces made many meticulous arrangements to cover up their mechanisms, including interfering with practitioners whose celestial eyes were open and with those who expose their bad deeds.
Subordinate Soul Misled by Gods
The god in charge of making these arrangements said to this subordinate soul, “You are given a sacred mission that allows you to be the subordinate soul of a reincarnated god. Your mission is to prevent a cultivator from discovering the secrets of subordinate souls and to safeguard our arrangements. You may face the danger of being discovered and destroyed. Are you willing to take on the mission?” The subordinate soul agreed.
The god continued, “When you are discovered and destroyed, within an hour the mechanism we set up long ago will automatically produce another you, which has the same mighty virtue and power. So you are not truly dead because we will prepare countless yous. You can then lead the group of gods to kill the god that destroyed you. Would you like to do this?” The subordinate soul agreed again.
“You will enjoy boundless honor upon returning to the world you originated from,” The god said. “Thanks to your merits, gods will record your dedication and great contributions.” The subordinate soul agreed and signed the pact.
The old forces also made other arrangements for this subordinate soul, including how to control the master soul, prevent the master soul from assimilating to the Fa, strengthen the master soul's desires, and so on.
Gods at that level were envious of this subordinate soul. After seeing this, I felt very sad for the subordinate soul of practitioner D.
In front of the reproduced subordinate soul, I thought: “The old forces have created so many subordinate souls. How many do I have to eliminate?”
At that moment, Master appeared and said kindly, “Let's give them more opportunities.”
A few days later, practitioner D stopped coming to our group to send righteous thoughts.
Attack by Deviated Subordinate Souls
On my way home after a group Fa study, I felt I was surrounded by shadows, layers upon layers of shadows, and I also heard the sound of heavy footsteps. When I turned around, there was no one there, only practitioner B was by my side. I felt that she was far away from me and I was shaking all over.
“Why am I so scared,” I asked.
“The evil is persecuting you,” responded practitioner B. “Let me take you home.”
The feeling of being scared came back the next evening, and by the third day, I felt as if my body had been smashed to pieces. I lay in bed feeling a bit confused and stupefied. Then I saw pieces of human body parts in other dimensions. I told practitioner B about it.
“Maybe your body had indeed been torn into pieces at one level,” said practitioner B.
At that time we did not join fellow practitioners to send righteous thoughts. Two days passed. I saw Master looking for the remains of my body in an immense cosmos. Master then pieced together my bodily remains and they turned into a tablet on which was written, “In memory of the sacrifice made by Dafa disciple so and so, who was destroyed by meddling deities during the Fa-rectification period on such and such a date. The tablet shone radiantly. Master put his hand on the tablet and it turned into a paradise and entered the new universe.
The day after I saw the inscription on the tablet, I was at home, and all of a sudden, I felt extremely uncomfortable and my heart ached as if it was broken. I felt very weak and was covered in a cold sweat. I felt as if I was going into shock. I gathered all my strength and asked practitioner B to send righteous thoughts for me.
After I had just sat down in the full lotus position, I noticed that my feet had turned black and blue. I asked Master to strengthen me and held a very strong thought, “I have Master taking care of me. No one can move me.”
As soon as I held up my palm, I saw Master and many other righteous gods. Master said, “It seems we truly cannot keep them anymore.” I knew Master was referring to the subordinate souls of practitioner D and many other practitioners.
Maligned by Practitioner D
Then why is it that so many fellow practitioners' subordinate souls got involved? As it turned out, after practitioner D stopped joining others in sending righteous thoughts, he talked with many practitioners, telling them what I did was wrong and so on and so forth. As a result, many practitioners began to oppose me.
In other dimensions, practitioner D's subordinate soul gathered many other subordinate souls to destroy my flesh body and my true self in the flesh body.
