A Chance Encounter On a Bus
I sat down next to a young man on the bus one day. He was intently reading his cell phone. I asked, “Can you go online on your cell phone?” “Yes,” he replied.
I said, “In China, much of the news is fake. The Party spent billions developing the firewall, which blocks the real news from overseas. I have a software program that can help you break through the firewall and read the overseas news.”
He looked up and I continued. “News about the 'Self-Immolation Hoax on Tiananmen Square', 'The Story Behind the Fall of Bo Xilai', 'The Wave of People Suing Ex-President Jiang Zemin', etc...”
He suddenly asked, “Do you know what my job is? I'm a police officer and I'm in charge of this area.”
I was not moved, and said calmly, “Then you have an even greater need to know the truth. The Chinese constitution proclaims that citizens have freedom of speech and freedom of belief. But the Party has taken those rights away from us, especially from Falun Gong practitioners.”
Despite the danger of my talking to a police officer about Party censorship, I sincerely wanted him to become aware of the facts. I knew that he should know about the consequences of persecuting Falun Gong. I said, “Looking back through the Party's history, it has always used the front line law enforcement, like you, as scapegoats to shirk their responsibility and cover up their crimes. You need to be careful.”
He listened quietly, but did not take the software as a person in front of him kept looking at us. He smiled at me and said, “I need to get off.”
I said, “Please be careful and don't participate in the persecution of Falun Gong. I want you to have a good future.”
He smiled, nodded his head and got off the bus.
Officer Takes a Flier
I was handing out Falun Gong fliers with another practitioner one day, and a middle-aged man took a flier. He appeared very nervous, and whispered to us, “I am an officer from the Domestic Security Team. I will pretend I did not see what you were handing out. Please be careful! Go now!”
Encountering a Plainclothes Officer
Another practitioner and I went to a farmer's market to hand out fliers one morning, and I gave the last one to a middle-aged man. I planned to buy vegetables at the market afterward.
The man asked, “Is this about Falun Gong?” We said yes and started to tell him why we advise people to quit the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its affiliated organizations.
He was very happy to quit the Party. He said, “You Falun Gong practitioners are amazing. These materials are really well made.”
He then urged us to leave quickly and said, “There are many plainclothes officers here. If you are done distributing your materials, please leave. Be careful.”
We realized that he must a plainclothes officer, so we left right away.
The police in China have been used by the Party as tools to carry out persecution of Falun Gong for many years. But many police officers do not wish to persecute people who have broken no laws. They are willing to listen to the facts about the persecution and quit the Party.
