Physician Dies after Numerous Arrests for Her Faith

Jan. 27, 2018 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Anhui Province, China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Wang Ping of Wuhe County died in May 2017, after years of repeated arrests and detentions for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a mind-body practice based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

The 53-year-woman credited Falun Gong for returning her to health. As a physician at Wuhe Health and Epidemic Prevention Station, Ms. Wang couldn’t find a cure for her myriad of health problems. Her symptoms, however, disappeared shortly after she took up Falun Gong in 1998.

Ms. Wang’s husband had an affair during their earlier years of marriage. Because of their strained relationship, Ms. Wang didn’t attend her father-in-law’s funeral. But after she became a Falun Gong practitioner, she decided to forgive her husband. She not only paid all his debts accumulated during his affair but also cared for him until his death. She continued to look after her mother-in-law after her husband’s passing.

Having personally experienced Falun Gong’s transformative power, Ms. Wang never wavered in her faith after the Chinese communist regime launched a nationwide campaign against the spiritual discipline in July 1999.

Ms. Wang became a target for persecution during the next two decades. She was arrested more than 30 times, half of which took place during a 15-month window between March 2012 and June 2013.

She was thrice given forced labor and sentenced to prison once. Each time when she was detained, she suffered brutal torture. Despite all this, she kept practicing Falun Gong and talking to people about it every time she was released.

She filed a criminal complaint in December 2015 against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for initiating the persecution of Falun Gong. Below is a highlight of her suffering as documented in her complaint.

Over 30 Arrests

Ms. Wang was arrested more than 30 times between 2000 and 2016.

May 2000: detained at Chengxi Police Station for one day

October 2002: detained at Wuhe County Lockup for 15 days

October 2004: detained at Wuhe County Detention Center for 7 days

January 6, 2005, to December 5, 2005: detained at Anhui Province Women’s Labor Camp

November 2006: detained at Huaiyuan Mental Hospital for one week

April 2008: detained at Wuhe County Detention Center for one month

January 13, 2009, to February 13, 2009: detained at Bengbu City Second Detention Center

July and August 2010: twice detained at Wuhe County Lockup for a total of 30 days

October 9 to 23, 2010: detained at Bengbu City Brainwashing Center

February and March 2011: thrice detained at Wuhe County Lockup for a total of 15 days

July 1 to October 17, 2011: detained at Anhui Province Women’s Prison

March 2012 to June 2013: arrested more than ten times and detained at Wuhe County Lockup for 3-5 days each time

February 14 to March 4, 2013: detained at Bengbu City Second Detention Center

July 2013: detained at Hefei City Mental Hospital for 9 days

May 6 to June 13, 2014: detained at Bengbu City Second Detention Center

June 13, 2014, to May 5, 2015: detained at Anhui Province Women’s Prison

January 22-23, 2016: detained at a local police station

2 Involuntary Admissions to Mental Hospital

Ms. Wang was sent to mental hospitals twice against her will. Officer Shen Shijun of the local domestic security office was responsible for her involuntary admissions. As police ransacked her home repeatedly and confiscated her Falun Gong books, Ms. Wang demanded her books back on more than one occasion. Shen not only refused to return her confiscated items but sent her to mental hospitals in retaliation.

3 Forced Labor Terms

Ms. Wang was given two-year forced labor in January 2005. In order to force her to give up her belief, the guards at Anhui Province Women’s Labor Camp taped her mouth shut, tied her hands behind her back, and forced her to listen to Buddhist music for hours on end.

She was not given enough food to eat. Once when she asked for more food, an inmate knocked over a bowl of food and ordered her to eat it off the floor.

Physical torture was commonplace, as Ms. Wang was beaten on a regular basis. Her health quickly declined, and she was released on medical parole on December 5, 2005.

Ms. Wang was given forced labor again following her arrest on January 13, 2009. As she failed the required medical examination, Anhui Province Women’s Labor Camp refused to admit her. Police tried two local detention centers, but both declined to take her. Police then had her to serve her 18-month-forced-labor under house arrest.

Ms. Wang was given another two years of forced labor in July 2011. She went on a hunger strike for three months in protest. The guards at Anhui Province Women’s Labor Camp force-fed her almost every day. Inmates often stuffed cloth or paper towels into her mouth before taping her mouth tightly. After the force-feeding was done, the cloth or towels were often soaked in blood. Four of her teeth became loose after the months-long force-feeding. She was later released on medical parole.

1 Prison-term

Ms. Wang was sentenced to one year in prison following her second-to-last arrest on May 6, 2014. She was held at Bengbu City Second Detention Center for 37 days, before being transferred to Anhui Province Women’s Prison to finish the rest of her term.

She was brutally tortured in prison. Convicted murderers Chen Yuquan and Li Fang often beat, pinched, or pricked her. They also used shoes to poke her mouth. She had trouble eating afterward. When she complained to guard Sun Wen, Sun replied, “Who saw them beat you?” She next reported to instructor Cao Xuezhi, but Cao said, “How dare you to file complaints here in prison!”

Ms. Wang was also forced to stand for long periods of time, do hard labor, or have injections of unknown drugs. Her family wasn’t allowed to visit or call her.

Ms. Wang’s release on May 5, 2015, didn’t bring her much respite, as the local police kept harassing her at home. She was last arrested on January 22, 2016, while traveling on a train.
