English Teacher Sentenced to Two Years for Studying Falun Gong Books

Nov. 13, 2018 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Inner Mongolia, China

(Minghui.org) A 57-year-old English teacher from Hulunbeir was studying Falun Gong books with 13 other practitioners when 20 officers suddenly broke in and arrested them on August 24, 2017.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a mind-body discipline persecuted by the communist regime since 1999.

While all the other practitioners were later released, the police kept Ms. Meng in custody at the Arun Detention Center. The guards shackled her ankles and forced her to walk in circles after she refused to renounce her faith. Meanwhile, the police ransacked her home several times in her absence and confiscated her Falun Gong books and computer, as well as 10,000 yuan in cash.

Ms. Meng stood trial at the Zalantun City Court on February 6, 2018, after the Procuratorate rejected her case twice, citing insufficient evidence.

In addition to her Falun Gong books and computer being used as evidence against her, the prosecutor and police also alleged that 1,000 copies of Falun Gong flyers were found in her home. No such flyer was presented in court. Ms. Meng denied having the flyers at her home.

Her lawyer delivered a non-guilty defense for her and argued that there was no legal basis for the persecution. The judge sentenced her to a two year prison term at the end of the trial.

Ms. Meng appealed the sentence. The Arun Court heard her case on July 26, 2018 and upheld the sentence.

She was taken to the Hohhot Women's Prison in September 2018.
