Shanghai Woman Given a Second Three-year Term for Her Faith

June 7, 2018 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Shanghai

(Minghui.org) A woman in Shanghai was sentenced to three years in prison for a second time on May 29, 2018.

Ms. Liu was first jailed in 2007 for refusing to renounce Falun Gong, a mind-body practice being persecuted by the Chinese communist regime. She continued to practice Falun Gong after she was released.

The local authorities threatened to terminate her son's job if he refused to cooperate with them in persecuting his mother. They also warned local landlords to not rent to her. Ms. Liu and her husband, both in their mid-70s, were forced to move frequently. Ms. Liu had worked in Xinjiang Province for 38 years before retiring and relocating to Shanghai. The persecution rendered her unable to have a long-term residence.

Ms. Liu went to the local community officer in 2017 to request the return of her confiscated Falun Gong books. Xue Shengyu reported her to police, who soon arrested her. Her lawyer defended her constitutional right to freedom of belief during her trial on May 29, 2018.

The presiding judge warned the lawyer to not talk about whether the persecution is legal, and the lawyer refuted the unreasonable request.

The judge sentenced Ms. Liu to 3 years and fined her 10,000 yuan.
