At the courthouse Mr. Li learned that his wife had been sentenced to a seven-and-a-half-year prison term and he had been sentenced to a three-and-a-half-year suspended sentence. He refused to sign the documents and was detained for 15 days.
The couple's daughter, Ms. Li, was once a typical college student, but she developed a mental disorder after she was repeatedly pressured by the authorities to give up her belief in Falun Gong. She gradually lost her ability to take care of herself.
While her father went to help a neighbor on September 22, 2017, a fire broke out in their own home and soon spread to another neighbor's apartment. Mr. Li was able to get his daughter out, but he is now struggling to care for her while his wife is still in prison.
