Practitioner Ms. Xia Ning Tortured in Liaoning Women's Prison

March 8, 2019 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Liaoning Province, China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Xia Ning, a 65-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Xingcheng City, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison by the Xingcheng City Court in January 2018. She was taken to Liaoning Women's Prison in April 2018, and detained in Squad 4, Section 3. The prison guards tortured her.

When the communist regime, under the former dictator Jiang Zemin, launched the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, the officials at the prison followed the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) directive closely in torturing Falun Gong practitioners. The guards used all possible means to force practitioners to give up their belief and write the three statements renouncing their faith.

As soon as Ms. Xia Ning was imprisoned in Section 3 of the prison, the guards tortured her.

The officials, however, have changed from “open” to “hidden” methods. As the persecution was constantly exposed to the international community, Liaoning Women's Prison felt pressure and used torture not easily visible – they became more sinister and began to conceal their actions.

Debit Cards

Inmates in Liaoning Women's Prison use debit cards to purchase daily necessities at the prison grocery store. In the past, every new inmate was given access to a debit card. However, in recent years, the cards were issued after several months or even half a year later.

For a regular inmate, this new system created no problem, as other inmates shared their cards. However, inmates were prohibited to help Falun Gong practitioners.

Even when debit cards were issued to practitioners, they may not use them, unless they renounce their faith. Forbidden items include toilet paper, sanitary napkins, toothpaste, soap, and laundry powder.

Ms. Xia refused to renounce Falun Gong, and write the three statements, so she was forbidden from buying anything in the prison store. Although there are no formal rules, every section abides by the hidden rules.

Not Allowed to Bathe

After Ms. Xia was taken to Squat 4, Section 3 of Liaoning Women's Prison in April 2018, she was not allowed to brush her teeth, wash her hair, or take a shower.

The inmates in her cell did not like the odor, so they demanded that she “transform”.

Forced to Stand for Extended Time

Ms. Xia had to stand motionless beside the workshop window all day long. Two criminals took turns to monitor her until 10:00 p.m. On Sundays or holidays she was forced to stand around the clock.

She was 65 years old, an elderly lady with gray hair. Yet, she was not spared that ordeal.

Personal monitors watched Ms. Xia around the clock. Such monitors are called special act teams and usually consist of two criminals. They monitor every word and behavior of a given practitioner, then report anything they notice to the guards.

Prison Management Arrangements

Prison management considers anything that concerns practitioners to be of high priority. The personal monitors watch closely and oversee a practitioner – what the practitioner wears, eats, how he or she walks, and so on.

The prison guards give the personal monitors a blank authority regarding the persecution of the practitioners. One can hear the personal monitors screaming at, cursing, and scolding practitioners. If the personal monitor did not report everything about the practitioner, and the guards found out, he or she would be punished.

The other inmates were very tired as they had to work from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and then monitor practitioners afterward. This made them hate the practitioners.
