(Minghui.org) A 79-year-old woman on bail awaiting trial for her faith in Falun Gong was taken back into custody on August 3, 2019 when she went to talk to the prosecutor about her case.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Sun Weizhen's family reported her disappearance to the local police station when she didn't return home that evening, only to be told that she had already been taken to Tangchi Detention Center.
Ms. Sun's son went to Zhen'an District Procuratorate on August 6 and talked to the prosecutor in charge of her case. The prosecutor told him that Ms. Sun was certain to be sentenced this time unless her family could persuade her to give up her faith.
Ms. Sun's son replied that he could not do that. He said his mother had to quit her job due to poor health when she was a young worker. Soon after she took up Falun Gong, however, she quickly recovered from her symptoms. Now she is in very good health despite her advanced age. She doesn't need any care from her children and could also take good care of her bedridden husband.
Ms. Sun, a resident of Dandong City, Liaoning Province, was arrested while walking on the street on June 15, 2019, after she was reported for being a Falun Gong practitioner.
The police searched her purse and found a copy of a notice issued by the Chinese publication bureau in 2011 to revoke its ban on the publication of Falun Gong books.
The police submitted her case to Zhen'an District Procuratorate on July 2, 2019, accusing her of breaking the law by possessing the notice.
Though Ms. Sun was later released on bail, she was taken back into custody before a court date was set.
This is not the first time that Ms. Sun has been arrested for her faith. She was sentenced to one year in prison in 2016 and later released on medical parole.
