(Minghui.org) A man in his 80s remains in a coma in an intensive care unit (ICU) after he was abused to the point of losing consciousness in detention for refusing to renounce Falun Gong.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.
Mr. Kui Yingxiang, of Nanyang City, Henan Province, was arrested in a police sweep on August 31, 2019. Another 37 local Falun Gong practitioners and their family members were arrested around the same time.
The police had monitored the practitioners for months and collected their personal information before executing the arrests. Many of the practitioners had their homes ransacked and valuables confiscated.
Mr. Kui was detained at Nanyang City Detention Center, where he was tortured into critical condition. He has been in the ICU for more than ten days as of April 24.
The police are demanding that Mr. Kui’s son take him home so that they wouldn’t have to continue to cover Mr. Kui’s medical expenses, which amounted to 12,000 yuan per day. But his son refused and demanded to know how Mr. Kui had been abused so badly that he'd require intensive care.
It was reported that most of the practitioners arrested in Nanyang last August had been indicted and their cases moved to Wancheng Court, where they were scheduled to appear in early May 2020. It’s not clear whether Mr. Kui's court date has been set.
