(Minghui.org) A Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province resident suffered a mental breakdown six months after she was arrested for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Liang Shuiqing, a beauty salon owner in her 40s, was summoned to the Jianhua District Procuratorate on June 23, 2020. She answered the questions by the prosecutor, but refused to sign the interrogation record.
On July 9, police officer Li Yize arrested her and said they were closing the case regarding her earlier arrest on November 14, 2018. Following her 2018 arrest, Ms. Liang was detained for a month before being released on bail. The police extorted 2,000 yuan from her mother in June 2019 as her bail bond.
Officer Li claimed that Ms. Liang’s arrest had been approved. He asked for 500 yuan from her family to pay for her coronavirus test.
When her family demanded to see the documents about her arrest, Li replied that they didn’t have the right to see it. He yelled at her family and drove them away. Ms. Liang was then taken to the Tailai County Detention Center.
Ms. Liang was indicted in August 2020 and her case was forwarded to the Jianhua District Court. She was convicted for upholding her faith and given a suspended sentence on December 29, 2020. She was also forced to write statements to renounce Falun Gong before she was released. By the time she returned home, she had already been in a delirious state. It’s not clear what abuses she has suffered in custody in addition to the mental pressure.
In the past two decades, Ms. Liang and her family have been repeatedly targeted for her faith. Her salon business was severely affected. She was also arrested and detained for a month in November 2015 for filing a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the Chinese communist regime who ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999.
