(Minghui.org) A Kunming City, Yunnan Province resident imprisoned for practicing Falun Gong is being denied medical parole despite his serious condition.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Li Wenbo, 55, was last arrested on August 23, 2019 for doing Falun Gong exercises in public. He was sentenced to six years in December that year and admitted to Yunnan Province No. 1 Prison on June 21, 2020.
On January 10, 2021, he was hospitalized for vomiting blood. After a thorough examination, he was found to have severe intestinal obstruction, gastritis, gastric erosion, gastrointestinal bleeding, and anemia. He requested medical parole in order to seek better medical treatment. The prison authorities rejected him and refused to bear any responsibility for his health.
Mr. Li was transferred to the prison’s quarantine facility on January 19 after he was discharged from the hospital. He vomited blood again on January 21. At the same time, he is having difficulty eating as three of his upper teeth were broken.
Mr. Li recently applied to be released on medical parole again for medical treatment, as the prison hospital doesn’t have a dental department. He is yet to receive a response from the prison.
While still waiting for the decision from the prison, Mr. Li has also filed a motion to reconsider his case with the higher court in Yunnan.
Prior to his latest prison term, Mr. Li was given three years of forced labor in 2005. His vision worsened, he lost six teeth, and had an eight-inch-long scar on his left leg, as a result of abuse at the Yunnan Province No. 2 Forced Labor Camp. His term was extended by three months because he would not renounce his faith.
He was arrested again only one year after he was released, and sentenced to five years in prison in 2009. The guards beat, verbally abused, and hung him up by his handcuffs. He developed inflammation and ulcers in the esophagus, as well as a severe stomach problem.
