(Minghui.org) Three Falun Gong practitioners were admitted to the Chengdu Women’s Prison in Sichuan Province on June 24, 2021 to serve time for their faith, an ancient spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
The three women include one of three siblings arrested together and two other practitioners who were arrested a few months earlier with another practitioner.
Three Siblings Wrongly Convicted 10 Months After Arrests
Ms. Luo Qiaoli, a resident of Hunan Province, was arrested in February 2020 while visiting her parents in Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province. Her sister, Ms. Luo Qiaoping and brother Mr. Luo Xiaoxing, were also arrested. All three siblings were wrongly convicted in December 2020, with Mr. Luo given 8 years, Ms. Luo Qiaoli 5 years, and Ms. Luo Qiaoping 4 years.
Mr. Luo Xiaoxing and Ms. Luo Qiaoping were admitted to the Jiazhou Prison and Chengdu Women’s Prison on March 16 and May 19, 2021, respectively.
Ms. Luo Qiaoli was transferred to the Chengdu Women’s Prison with Ms. Chen Xiangyun and Ms. Nie Rongqin on June 24, 2021.
Three Women Sentenced One Year After Their Arrests
Ms. Chen and Ms. Nie, both of Panzhihua City, Sichuan Province, were arrested on September 25, 2019, with practitioner Ms. Liu Xiuzhen.
Ms. Chen, Ms. Nie, and Ms. Liu were held at the Panzhihua City Detention Center. The Xi District Procuratorate returned their case to the police for insufficient evidence on January 23, 2020 but later indicted them after the police submitted their case again in early March 2020.
Ms. Chen, Ms. Nie, and Ms. Liu were sentenced on September 16, 2020 by the Xi District Court to four years with a 20,000-yuan fine. They appealed in the Panzhihua City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold the original verdict.
Ms. Liu was previously transferred to the Chengdu Women’s Prison with Ms. Luo Qiaoping on May 19, while Ms. Chen and Ms. Niu were taken there a month later with Ms. Luo Qiaoli.
Past Persecution of Ms. Luo Qiaoli
Prior to the latest prison sentence, Ms. Luo Qiaoli, a 55-year-old former employee of a nitrogen fertilizer plant in Loudi City, Hunan Province, was incarcerated twice for 5.5 years for her faith.
Ms. Luo was first arrested in October 1999 for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. She was detained for 15 days.
She was arrested again and given 1.5 years of forced labor in June 2000 for raising awareness about the persecution. She was fired by her workplace and also constantly harassed by security personnel from her workplace and agents of the local 610 Office (an extralegal agency created specifically to persecute Falun Gong).
Although she lived away from home to hide from the authorities, Ms. Luo was arrested again in 2003 and sentenced to four years by the Beihu District Court in Chenzhou City, Hunan Province on December 5, 2003, for talking to people about Falun Gong.
After Ms. Luo was taken to the Hunan Province Women’s Prison on March 2, 2004, the prison held three brainwashing sessions over the next four months in an attempt to force the practitioners to renounce their faith.
In addition to the intensive brainwashing, the practitioners were forced to do “corporal training,” such as the “frog jump,” single leg jump and running, especially when they were already very weak from torture.
When the practitioners refused to comply, the guards held them in solitary confinement and forced them to stand for long hours or handcuffed them in an excruciating position with one hand pulled over the shoulder and the other hand pulled up from the back. Ms. Luo was shocked with an electric baton on her mouth for talking to inmates about Falun Gong.
