(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Chen Wenduo and Mr. Han Xiao were illegally tried on February 18, 2014 by the Bayuquan District Court in Yingkou City, Liaoning Province.
The day before, the court specifically issued permits for the two practitioners' family members to audit the hearing. To their shock, however, all of them were denied entry the following day, and they had to wait outside anxiously while the judge conducted the proceedings behind closed doors.
In the meantime, a drama unfolded outside the courthouse. Li Yang, a special agent from Bayuquan Domestic Security Division, pretended to be a Falun Gong practitioner and kept videotaping concerned family members and local practitioners who had come to support Mr. Chen and Mr. Han.
When someone recognized Li Yang as a police officer, she then claimed to be Mr. Chen’s daughter and ran towards the police tape. While trying to stop her from crossing the police line, Mr. Chen’s wife, Ms. Liu Dan, fell on her.
The police chased Ms. Liu when she got up and walked away. They kicked her so hard that she lost consciousness. Despite her family’s plea that she be taken to the hospital, the police took her to the Honghai Police Station and charged her with “attacking a police officer” and gave her 15 days in the Yingkou City Detention Center.
Outraged by the groundless accusation against and gross mistreatment of Ms. Liu, her family and lawyer filed a complaint against Bayuquan Domestic Security Division. They are awaiting a response from Yingkou City Procuratorate.
With Permits in Hand, Family Members Still Denied Entry to Courtroom
The day before the trial, the court informed the two practitioners’ families to come to the courthouse to apply for permits to audit the hearing. Mr. Chen’s family was issued 8 permits and Mr. Han’s 5.
When the two families arrived at the courthouse shortly before 9 the next morning, they saw blue police tape along the west and south sides of the courthouse and dozens of uniformed officers guarding the building.

There were also plainclothes officers everywhere. Some hid in the police vehicles to monitor the crowd, while others were disguised as court employees, family members or local practitioners.
When the families presented their hearing permits and IDs to the officers at the west gate, they were stunned to find out only two members from each family were allowed to go in. The police refused to give them an explanation and simply told them to talk to certain court employees at the south gate.
The court employees directed them back to the police.
When the families returned to the west gate, the police informed them that the new order from their higher-ups now prohibited any family members from attending the trial.
At that point, the two defense attorneys arrived and learned of the unexpected turn of events. They took pictures of the family members’ hearing permits and IDs and promised to check with the judge when they went in the courtroom.
However, the lawyers weren’t able to make any difference. While the trial was held behind closed doors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the families were left waiting outside.
Ms. Liu Dan Charged with Attacking a Special Agent
Li Yang, the special agent mentioned earlier, wore a blue down jacket and a face mask. She had on a special pair of glasses she used to videotape the surroundings.

At first Li pretended to be a practitioner herself and walked around to videotape Mr. Chen and Mr. Han’s family members and local practitioners who showed up to support the two gentlemen.
When questioned about her intention, she whispered, “I am also a practitioner. Don’t make any noise. I’ll send your videos to the Epoch Times later.”
After someone recognized her as a police officer from Bayuquan Domestic Security Division and stopped her from videotaping, she suddenly ran to the police tape, yelling, “Let me in! Let me in! I want to see my father Chen Wenduo!”
The officers guarding the police tape didn’t know Li Yang was one of them, so they pushed her away. Li refused to leave, and during the tussle, the tape got tangled around her neck.
With Mr. Chen’s own daughter present at the scene, his wife, Ms. Liu Dan, couldn’t believe her ears. She decided to stop Li Yang from pretending to be her daughter. She tried to pull Li back from the police line, but they both fell during the struggle.
After one plainclothes officer revealed Li Yang’s identity, the officers on guard who got the tape wrapped around her neck immediately shifted the blame to Ms. Liu, alleging that she intended to strangle Li.
Just then a screwdriver accidentally fell out of a man's pocket. The officers then charged Ms. Liu with attacking the police with a screwdriver.
Ms. Liu ignored the officers’ allegations and simply walked away. The police chased her, held her down, and kicked her so hard that she lost consciousness.
Her family managed to get her back from the police but couldn't drive away. The police snatched her out of her family car and stuffed her into their police van.
The family drove behind the police to the Honghai Police Station, but chief Guo Baoli refused to release her, claiming he’d be responsible if she died in their custody.
The family returned to the courthouse to wait outside to learn Mr. Chen’s fate. When the lawyer finally emerged after the hearing was over, he learned from the family that Ms. Liu was given 15 days of detention at the Yingkou Detention Center.
The lawyer and the family went to the police station to request Ms. Liu’s release, but were turned down again. They filed a complaint against the Domestic Security Division to Yingkou City Procuratorate and are now awaiting a response.
Background Information on Mr. Chen Wenduo and Ms. Liu Dan
Both Mr. Chen and Ms. Liu were teachers at No. 24 Middle School in Yingkou City. Mr. Chen taught math and Ms. Liu English. Because of their belief in Falun Gong, they were fired, fined, and detained on many occasions.
For a long time, the couple had to leave home and move around to avoid arrest.
Plainclothes officers broke into the couple’s home on November 14, 2013 and arrested Mr. Chen. They looted a lot of cash and other valuables. The couple’s car was also confiscated. This was all done without a search or arrest warrant.
Yingkou City Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Mr. Chen without conducting an investigation. They found all kinds of excuses to not meet with the family, who later retained a lawyer to fight for Mr. Chen’s release. The lawyer, however, was not allowed to review his client’s case documents.
The procuratorate forwarded Mr. Chen’s case to the court about a month later, without following any legal procedures.
